Na'vi quizzing app for iPod/iPhone?
« on: January 08, 2010, 04:03:50 pm »
Would there be such a thing? I looked around the forum and even the iTunes app Store and I haven't seen anything. This would be pretty useful if there's somthing out there or if anyone knows?

Irayo  :)

There are online programs for flashcards and audio and such, but an iPhone app has yet to come to fruition.

If you did make that app you'd be the most valuable person on the forum. Seriously.

I did look in to it, but the basic SDK is $99 and you need to know programming and math (ack!). And if you wanted to sell it to make up the debt from the SDK, you'd run into all sorts of copyright issues with the language. So for an average joe to take it on is more trouble than it's worth.

I think I'll give this a shot once I've picked up an iMac (which will be soon, hopefully).  I have a fair amount of C programming experience, and I honestly wouldn't mind paying the $99 out of my own pocket to help ma smuktu learn Na'vi.  If anyone wanted to collaborate on this, let me know.  All my experience is with text-based programs, so if someone in here knew objective-C you would be my hero.

Good primary sources would be Ftiafpi's audio files and Taronyu's dictionary, and you might as well throw in the pocket guide and compendium for reference.

Interesting idea. I would need a more laid out idea to see if there was copyright infringement. Aside from that kinda stuff its a nice idea, i just cant say "yes now plz" or "no wai" till i saw more of the idea out.

Well I just decided that this would be a good reason for me to renew my iPhone developer membership.  I'm going to play around with some iPhone app ideas, but in the meantime if anybody has any suggestions on app features, or other apps to look at for inspiration, please fire away.

the star trek: klingon phrasebook by simon and schuster on the app store has an appealing format. Something along those lines would be good, but selecting and recording all the phrases from the megathread would be painful at the least. I also think the navi->English translator should be embedded somehow.

I <3 Obj-C.  I'm also interested in the idea of opening this up into an open source style of community project.

If anyone is interested in learning Obj-C / Cocoa I highly recommend the Aaron Hillegass Book.

As far as copyright infringement goes, there shouldn't be any pictures/soundclips/etc. from the movie (ideally, all audio files used in the app should be created by users on this forum).  I would also say that any proper names from the movie should be excluded from the app, and there shouldn't be any sentences that are directly from the movie (aside from necessary ones, such as "Oel ngati kame").  I'm not exactly a copyright expert, so some of that may be overkill (or perhaps not enough?), but I think that covers all the major bases.

I am downloading the Klingon Suite for research purposes.

I'm not saying direct copy, it's just I like the tabs at the bottom and the audio in both languages. Pull a frommer and stay away to avoid influence from it.

Too late...

I played around with it for all of 30 seconds and I like what I see, well not the Klingon parts but how things are laid out. I see what you mean on the tabs and audio.

But please keep it free if it does work out. Wading through the inevitable legal muck would be too much if the app is put up for profit. Yes more internet moneys would be nice, but tshirt sales have got that covered.

Yeah, I was planning on keeping it free to try to avoid those problems...
