Ok well since the only practice we can from writing in na'vi is .. well writing, i thought it would be great if we could get some kind of voice server like ventrillo or teamspeak so we can practice conversing in na'vi.  There are many vocal elements to the language that we cannot practice without speaking it.

We all use Skype right now. Until the voice chats exceed 25 people, then we will look at a Ventrilo server.  Plus we need to get some money for the community to start a server. :P

omumyu

o cool how could i get into this skype group?

I'd be interested in a Na'vi Vent server... I don't use Skype so I'm feeling left out now :(

Vent servers aren't that expensive either, $10 a month gets you 40-50 slots from Hypernia. http://www.hypernia.com/voice_servers-ventrilo.php

Well for right now we are going to be sticking to Skype until the need arises that we will need to switch to Vent.  Everyone should have Skype anyways, it is a nice program and more people are using it everyday! :)

*Note: Skype did not pay me to plug them :P

I would use ventrillo, but only if a lot of people use it.

Just a side note but, though I haven't had a whole lot of time to dedicate to the language because of work, I'd be willing to at least temporarily host a Ventrilo server. I also know how to set up computers to use on an 8 person basis for free using Vent via their local (local as in, the server is set up on your computer) servers.

If people thought it'd be used, I'll set one up. Until then; it's Fhangrin on Skype. If you need a hand being creative with breaking down words to something that'll fit in Na'vi, or need an interesting synonym or some such, feel free to bug me. (If I don't respond right away, I may be at work.)

We passed 8 people at once the first day skype was being used, I think.  It's not uncommon to have 15-20 people.

I don't even know how to find everyone on Skype. I already tried a general forum search for people that use skype, to no avail.

Post in here with your username. I will most likely be the one to add you.

I have a suggestion that will allow people that use this website to get into groups online and talk to eachother. There is a program that I have used for a couple years now that is called Ventrilo.  It allows people to talk to eachother through the internet (that is if you have a Mic for your computer) And there people can learn or teach Na'vi or just give their opinions.

Please let me know if this is a good idea. If so i'll be willing to set one up for everyones use.

Or if there is already a system like this set up please let me know.

While Ventrillo would work better than Skype for large group conversations, at the moment a server hosted for the Na'vi community has not been created yet, so we're making due.  Unfortunately we're a bit beyond the limits of the 8 slot personal Ventrillo server.

There should be something else eventually, because Skype is very cumbersome to use in this manner.

The ventilo server I would have set up will hold 50 people.  I think that would be enough.

We have been looking for a stable Vent server for a while. a 50 man you say? I'll talk it over with the others and we'll make a decision :)

Merged na'vi ventrillo? and Talk to others in Na'vi into one topic. All voice chat discussion will be merged here, since Ventrillo is really the only logical next step.

I may (this is a big may) be able to get a TeamSpeak server online.  Not entirely sure about reliability, I would be hosting it off of a college internet connection.  However, it appears to have been stable for the last couple months.

I could have this server set up and ready to go in 2 weeks (im on break right now, and am not at college).  I know that people would rather use Ventrillo, but Vent costs money, teamspeak is free.  Also, in theory, theamspeak can handle up to 1000 users, but Im not sure if my college's internet could handle that many people.

Another nice thing about TeamSpeak (I have never used Vent, so not sure of its features), people can create their own channels on the server.  So, if someone wanted a "1 on 1" instructional/tutorial, they could create a channel for that.

Its just an idea, and I would have no problem hosting it for the time being, just to see how it worked out.  I could host it for about 16 weeks, after that, im done with classes for the summer.  If we still wanted it, someone else would have to host it.

Let me know what people think of this.

Ventrilo allows channels as well, and quite flexible control of them.

However the big one for me...  I've had horrible problems with sound quality and large groups of people on teamspeak, but Ventrilo has never given me any problems.  Sure, it costs a little, but IMO it's worth it.

Ive never had a problem with quality in TeamSpeak.

Also, dont forget that TeamSpeak 3 just released, and that would be what I would run.

I have a poll open asking if people would accually use my server or not.  I just would like to get an idea of how many people would be willing to try it.

Actually lets keep this in one thread as Nume fpi sänume pointed out right before your post.  The threads are about the same thing.
