i like that background... what about setting it up as a flash? there usually small files and adjust 2 the size if the browser window? just an idea

Flash does not solve any problem. Instead of loading a bloated image, you're loading a bloated image AND a swf file.

yea but if we changed the log in to a flash we wouldnt have the "big images" problem b/c it would be a small swf file... but i do see where your comming from about how many times we log in.. im always logged in.. but i mean for the people who r joining and such it would make for a pleasant opening

How many times do I have to repeat it? It's flash, it does not change a bit. highres pic with waste of traffic stays highres pic with waste of memory. Flash is not a magical "I resize files to 0B" thing, I'm sorry.

The problem isn't that it's impossible to store data offline

maybe its possible with a greasemonkeyscrip, this wouldnt require any change on the server. and for imagehosting: there are enough freehosters where you could store them. maybe they are not lucky about that but with greasemonkey everybody could make up his own imageserver theoretically and there is no actual connection to learnnavi.org .

Why not just make an own browser, written in a language which is not based on English but Na'vi and THEN do it? Seriously. Forget it. With today's technology, something like that is just not possible. You can't force users to use a specified plugin or browser. And most of them won't do that for only one site.

i thought it was clear that, due to bandwidth, this option would be only optional. besides that userscripts (greasemonkeyscripts) are not firefox only. at all its only an idea. there might be better ones but for registered members who want to change the layout thats definitely doable.

I don't think you quite understand the server prowess required to serve a 2mb file to everyone who visits a site this popular.

Besides, as nifty as it is, as a web designer, having an intro/splashscreen detracts from usability. It's one more click between users and what they want, even if it's a really neat looking click. I think there's potential here, just not as a login screen.

Giant image splash pages are so 2005, as pretty as they can be. The server (cluster) is currently distributing about 50 GB on a daily basis. Attaching a 2 MB image to the front page isn't the best of plans when trying to cut down on stuff. Good idea though!

Another problem with a community is that it should integrate with the forum, or the users would need to register at two separate sites. That integration might get a little tricky.

Just out of curiosity, what hosting plan do you have atm?
