@navi_wotd. Na'vi word of the day on Twitter.
« on: March 27, 2011, 10:23:03 am »
On twitter I follow an account that used to send out a Na'vi word each day (@ninaviliuletrr). That's stopped since over a month, after a few months of operation.

As of this evening, around 20:00 GMT+1 DST (yeah, lu tsakrr nìmun), the new @navi_wotd twitter account will start sending out a Na'vi word of the day. I have automated the stuff, and the list of words is easily maintainable, so I can make certain there are LOTS of words for many days to come. (I have about 75 ready so far.)

If by chance the list might run out, the script will restart sending the words from the top, so there will be a Na'vi word of the day in any case. (Repetition, repetition, repetition, kefyak? ;) )

If you are interested in a Na'vi word a day, please follow @navi_wotd. It's there for everyone. The more the merrier.

Kìyevame!

Do you want to include a spoken sample of the word alone and in a sentence along with the text?  If you give me the list I can prep some recordings ahead of time and pass the URLs on for you to add.

Tewti! That would be awesome! I have put the file (it is a simple CSV) here for you.
There are almost 200 words in it already, and today word 4, yayo, was tweeted, so you know where it's at.

Well I've recorded a few starting at tomorrow's word (sar)...  You can link to them at http://navi.tyger.org/wotd_N.mp3 where N is the number.  Currently 5-7 are up, I'll put up more when I get a chance, before they are needed.

Fantastic job, irayo ma 'eylan!! I'll update things with the links. :-)

I have updated the script for use with the mp3s.
For each new word, the script will first attempt to download the appropriate mp3. If that is found, a link will be added to the tweet, otherwise no link will be generated. That is perhaps the safest way to go about this.

Local output for mp3 not found (test mode):

Quote

The length-statement is a pointer for me when developing, as a tweet is 140 characters max, and I want to keep an eye on the length of the descriptive texts.

I am already picturing a combination of all our efforts, together with @navilessons, to provide a link to a page that shows the description and that has a link to the mp3. Should not be too hard to set up.

I received this question from @Sulcharae

@navi_wotd Is there somewhere where one can see a transcript of the full sentences given as examples in the WoTD? :)

Is there? Perhaps we can work something out for that?

Right now the text of the sample usage exists as a Google Docs spreadsheet, but it's not published anywhere.  What did you have in mind for listing?  The difficulty is that, while I do record in batches, sometimes it's done at close to the last minute, and I don't write the samples until just before then.

I do want to make this as easy as possible, of course. I am a programmer, I can make a lot of things go automatic.

If you could share your transcripts on g-docs (perfect tool!) with me (read-only would be just fine), then I can download the file once in a while and write something simple to get them on a website. It is very easy for me to show only the transcripts upto the word that's been tweeted. That spot could then also have a link to the mp3 again, and the info that is in the tweet. A nice collection.

Would that be something you can live with? My gmail account is [email protected], in case you are interested in sharing the information. That way you would have to do nothing else/new/more.

And I must say that I appreciate the MP3s a LOT!!  :)

How about if I published it as a TSV file, and you could check it for updates whenever you publish a new word.

Sounds sweet, if this is not extra work for you. If you can let me know where I can get the file (I assume again from navi.tyger.org) then I can get that part working. I already set up a subdomain (http://naviwotd.nlpagan.net) on my own domain where I can create the webfiles. :)

It's great doing this together!

I put up a quick test-version of what I have in mind. It's not done yet, but to give you an idea:

http://nwyfre.homelinux.net/paulhome/web/naviwotd/

It still lacks the transcriptions of course, but that's a matter of time.

csv/tsv published versions available...  No it's not on navi.tyger.org (Though if you want I could setup a redirect for ease of use) as it's just a reference to the published version from Google Docs.  Note that it's based on an older version of your list so the definitions aren't exactly the same, but as long as you haven't moved the words around it should be fine as the numbers will line up still.

I suppose I should go back and provide mp3s for the first few as well since you have them linked.

Wow, the spreadsheet looks cool. And thank you for the link to the published version, this is going to work just fine! :)
If you can provide MP3s for the first few, that would be really nice. Again, at your convenience, this is not a paid job ;) If it is cumbersome, I can omit the links to the first 3 easily.

I think this is not bad for a quick start. http://naviwotd.nlpagan.net/

And it's all automatic. Your tsv gets downloaded everytime a new WotD is tweeted, and updated stuff goes to the web.
I may have another look at the layout etc. but for now this works. Thank you for the assistance!

(edit) And wow, just after the announcement I received this:

@navi_wotd My hearing impairment thanks you both :)

We're doing something right. :)

Made a small change to the naviwotd-site: javascript enable browsers now get a nice small window with the audio-player, instead of a full new window/tab.

If someone notices a problem with this, please let me know.

I have not specifically looked at all the words. The list has words of all levels, also for example "kxamtrrmaw - n. after noon (moments of the day)" is in it. I have tried to put a few groups of words together, like the base numbers, and there is a group with ordinals and one with colours. I hope this answers your question. There should be something in it for everyone, except probably the near native speakers.

I know!!!  :o  Something went terribly wrong this morning when somehow the bbc site connected to my navi_wotd account (I had stupidly enough forgotten to log out of twitter on the browser :-X )

Hmm. Normally the wotd would go out in 3.5 hours. I will speed it up for today and toss one out now. I kicked myself when I saw this happen...
