Voted for Dolphin.

SocialEngine doesn't seem to like my normal browser (FF 3.6.13 on Windows). :( Both times I opened it in FF, FF crashed while browsing around it.

That could be considered as a major problem..
Yeah it could. I tried it again in one of my VMs after posting. Result: VM's install of FF loaded the main page, but froze once I clicked on something.

In other news, it seems to work fine in IE8 (ugh, hate that browser).

So, we should go to bottom with that before we choose SE. I dont like the thought if leaving the second largest browser in the dark. It works fine in Fx 4.0 though

Could Friendika fit for what we're looking for? Read about it here: http://portal.friendika.com/features

I haven't installed it myself, but my friend installed it on his server--if I'm not utterly mistaken, no matter what server you hook up with initially, you have the option of pluggin in to the global network if you want it to. Or you can keep it private if you want. So it's flexible.

And free, and open source.

And free!

I can try finding out more about it if you'd like me to. My friend's trial install is up at http://tomo.interi.org/ but all you'll be able to see is a login page =)

I have FF 3.6.13 on XP Pro SP2, runs just fine.

I just tried again with all my extensions disabled...it worked fine. Now I need to figure out what extension hates SocialEngine so much...

EDIT: Ok...it seems to be my "Hide Google Options" extension (it removes the lefthand bar on google search results). I've never had an issue with it before, but SocialEngine crashes/hangs firefox if it's enabled.

Whoa, I should have checked this sub-forum way earlier, since I also came up with the idea of a social network - but exclusively for Avatar fans / Na'vi.

I called it OEIA, and got the domain ( http://www.oeia.net/ ) - which is still in the process of transferring to me).

This sounds like fun idea, although I'm not sure if there is an open-source package out there that would actually take care of something so entirely custom. Hum.

Trust me, if it's downloaded to be uploaded, it can be forced to anyone's customs. I'm working on the theme, which modifying any SMF system file is prohibited by some tracker, which has to be in the software. Then Tirea Aean is working on the language part of this forum.

But to do with the SocialNetwork thing, I haven't exactly been through the file systems enough to actually see how easy it would be to customize.

Sorry to continue distracting from the debate about Dolphin vs. SocialEngine, but after asking around a bit more, I now know about 3 *free* and *open-source* social networking engines:

- Friendika: http://portal.friendika.com/features

- Diaspora: https://joindiaspora.com/

- Open Social: http://www.opensocial.org/

I encourage you guys to give these a look. It would be a lot better not to pay someone else for an engine, and also to "own" our own little site without having to rent it/the code from someone else. Yah?

Grats on oeia.net fish... was it hard to get?

Count out Disapora. IF I got the whole thing right it doesn't play well (as in, not at all) with Apache and VirtualHosts. i.e. it would need a whole new dedicated server.

Otherwise I think that Friendika looks like a good option atm.

It would also be nice if we could hook up to the SMF user database for logging in to the social media type system.  Have 1 username and password for LearnNa'vi.org services...

I'd say that we change the poll. Dolphin or Friendka (Sorry EanaNantang, but SocialEngine is out of the game until someone is prepared to pay the $250 license).

As said, Diaspora doesn't play well with Apache, and Open Social seems to be more of an platform to develop Apps for other social networks (or did I miss something?).

Hm...I like it.

I'm the only user on the test install though, so trying some of it out is a bit difficult...

Oooh, something's actually happening with Diaspora! Might play around with that a lil bit. EDIT: ngix / ruby / CentOS. Never mind. I definitely would want to build a system that integrates with the LearnNavi userbase. One login to rule them all, or something.

And I bought oeia.net off the original owner for, well, money. There's more important things in life anyhow...

Doublepost!

I'm not sure I really like Friendka much either -- there's nothing really to do. Perhaps I'll spend some more time with it and explore deeper, but so far it doesn't look too promising.

FriendKa's interface was simple enough (I hate overly-complex UIs), but seemed a bit boring to me as well.

Frendika is like Facebook, it's simple, can't be designed on much, but doesn't have anything special.

Sіr. Ηaxalot

Unified logins might be tricky, but not impossible. An option would be some sort of OpenID like solution, or like the Facebook connect in Dolphin. (That's currently not working because I'm to lazy to get an API key)

I'm starting to think Dolphin is what we should use...
