Well, I'll just use timestamps to lock in this topic.

Well, Eanikran te Txuronyu Ateyo'itan was complaining on Facebook about it's system because it makes you do pointless stuff when you want to do something simple. Well, I  came up with a joke that implied OeyäUtral (MyTree) as a social network to try and take over Facebook/Myspace, and well, we both liked the idea. So, I was wondering, if we got coders (PHP, HTML, CSS, JS) and designers, (GIMP/PHOTOSHOP USERS) into this idea, who would like to try and make this real?

I could try and do some stuff in PHP, like the login system and PM's. Would take me a while though. Probably better off getting someone more advanced...

You can have a hoster! ...and possibly some help with PHP and coding.

Yeah, all I can do is table site layout. I can't much do DIV's because they never appear right for me, but other than that I can manage most HTML, plus the <?php insertion('') ?> stuff.

(The only PHP I know is <?php include('file.php'); ?> )

I can do some stuff in PS, if it helps anything. I'm not great with coding and such.

I could do some stuff in PHP/Python or similar, but this totally depends if I have the time left when it comes to programming.

Yeah, it looks like the best chance to be able to create something like this is to at least base it upon a finished system.

I'm not quite sure of what pointless stuff are you talking about? (other than joining a ton of pointless groups etc )

Update: I found a community software called Dolphin, that had a free version, so, I threw up a test site: http://oeyautral.skxawng.lu/

I don't know if there is one, however, I think it would be easier if you serched for an open-source social network...

Yeah, that's my thinking too. Creating a Community is a pretty big job, and require good knowledge of PHP or a similar language.

That's why I threw up a basic version of Dolphin, which looks to be pretty feature rich, but yet not too hard to customize. Of course that doesn't have to be a final decision if anyone finds something better.

Hm... nice interface. Of course I haven't seen what it looks like filewise, so I'll start looking into that.

Hm...looks interesting. I'm not big on social networking, but for some reason I can see myself using this...

The software, like Wordpress, SMF, etc... is all predefined. Which means once it's installed, it's basically ready from the dawn of existence. Everything else is done via FTP, and usually never interferes with anything, considering you put in the right coding.

Edit: I found one called 'socialengine.net'. It's not free, but it has walls.

No, usually people think you just get the template and figure everything out themselves. But, trust me, it's a lot of coding to define.

The nice thing about this system is that it has very powerful customization features even without modifying the Source code.

What do you think, should we give it a try?

SocialEngine doesn't seem to like my normal browser (FF 3.6.13 on Windows). Both times I opened it in FF, FF crashed while browsing around it.
