Revoicing Avatar Na'vi lines!
« on: February 24, 2012, 07:52:10 am »
Kaltxì ma frapo!

So I have this idea of actually revoicing the Na'vi lines from Avatar while correcting grammar and pronunciation. I have the (extremely badly dubbed) Chinese version of Avatar, and I've discovered that in the Chinese version the center channel contains just speech and nothing else. So with it gone, we can simply mix in voices without worrying about covering up the background.  ;)

I would probably at least need voices for Grace and Eytukan, the two biggest Na'vi butchers. You can simply record lines and then post them here or PM me attachments. I'd definitely recommend capturing sound snippets from the movie file and copying the same cadence and expressions so that the dub will fit the screen. I can't put a whole lot of sound up here though because of copyright issues of course.

Please correct any grammar mistakes! No more errors need to be injected  ;)

Omatikayaru tìhawnu sivi.
Paul somewhere said that this is a possible form of future tense.  :)

Aylì'u ngian nì'it skepek lu.
Just check dictionary: "ngian" = however. Surprisingly, "ngeyä" could fit here too...

Quote
Fìswiräri, ngal pelun molunge fìtsengur?
Topical can be used here, but in movie patientive is really used. And "fìtsengur" is incorrect - here must be used "fìtsenge" as adverb

Quote
((ketepeu)), fahew akewong.
It really sounds this way. Correct text would be something like this:
Oeri ontu l(äng)u teya fa peyä fahew akewong

Quote
Poltxe oe san, kea uniltìranyu ke zene ziva'u ne fìtseng.
This version is more comfortable for me too.

Quote
Fìpo lu 'awvea uniltìranyu a lu tsamsiyu a tsole'a ayoengal.
I'd ommit "a lu" and leave "-" mark as in wiki.

Quote
Ngenga 'itan Omatikayaä leruyu set. Na'viyä leruyu hapxì.
Why added <er>? Really not needed, why are you changing original text?

Quote
Mefoti yivìm.
<iv> not needed, same as above.

Quote
Ikranit mivakto, 'eko ta'em.
Also - <iv> not needed, "ikranti" is correct (you can always use -ti)

Quote
Omatikayaru tìhawnu sivi.
It is completely correct. There are two verb with the same meaning: hawnu (vtr) X tìhawnu si (vin).
So you can say these sentence with exactly same meaning:
Omatikayati hivawnu X Omatikayaru tìhawnu sivi
As dative is used in the movie, you must use intransitive version

I prefer not to do unnecessary changes like adding extra infixes

I just changed fìtsengur to fìtsenge and kept topical on this lline. The rest I corrected as per your comments. I think that in this sentence topical works better since in essence what is said is "Regarding this creature, why did you bring here?".

And another thing, do you think Neytiri and Mo'at need revoicing? Ney and Mo'at's problems are usually grammatical and not pronunciation (except for stress which everybody gets wrong) such as butchering case endings etc.

IMHO grammar is not problem of the actors. Take into account that at the time of movie shooting  knowledge of Na'vi language wasn't so wide as today. We are comparing prehistory with modern age.
But revision of complete Na'vi text from the movie is not completely wrong idea - there are more lines which can't be understand well or are probably incorrect.. At least it is good exercise. But question is if text after revision fits into movie...

It's probably worth remembering that some characters would have an incomplete grasp of the language anyhow.

As I understood it, he's just asking 'Why did you bring(/have you brought) this creature here?' which would use the patientive on "fìswirä." I think it makes sense to translate it as "Fìswiräti ngal pelun molunge fìtseng?"

Yes, but didn't Frommer write the script? I'm kinda unsure about why there are grammatical errors. Did the actors add or remove things on their own without Frommer's approval?

Anyway, maybe just Grace and Eytukan need revoicing. Grace for one has way too terrible Na'vi to reasonably be an experienced scientist dealing with the Na'vi for years. And she even tries to correct Norm's Na'vi, which is way better than Grace's.
