Hello,

I had the idea several weeks ago while having difficulty making work the program we use for our practicing of Na'vi hours with French friends, I though it would be a good idea to use a multi-platform web conferencing server for everyone to connect to, far more easily than Mumble or TeamSpeak and with extra functionalities (desktop display, Word/Powerpoint display integration, raising hands to speak, etc).

This is why I am planning to host a BigBlueButton server in short time, that would be more user-friendly and should cause much less issues.

I know that the forums are pretty calm currently (and this worries me, some projects seem dead). But I wanted to know who would be interested in order to help maintaining activity here and making Na'vi learning and practicing easier and more fun.  :)

Well... I don't know, if I'll be able to keep talking up, but if it'll work on my PC I'll try to be there, so activity of some kind might be there. :) And I'd really appreciate opportunity to practice spoken Na'vi. :)

Na'vi is a beautiful and musical language that is better when talked I believe.

The huge advantage I see in this system is that, to join a conversation or a lesson, all you need it a web browser with the latest version of Flash Player and a microphone. No other program to install nor heavy calibration or configuration to do (I'm the one who'll get head aches configuring the server :D ).

I hope to help the Ngaynume and Neytiri projects with that system. I'll pay the server from my pocket as I might be using it for other experimentations as well.

I'd be willing to check it out, and maybe even offer some lessons once you can get this server up and running :)

Great. :)

If there are more people interested in that, I may open a public Calendar for this and set the hours for free use and the hours where there are lessons in it.

As soon as I organize my free time better, I will get the dedicated server and setup that. Could take one week or two though since I am working.

Sounds very interesting, it could be good replacement for Ngaynume (which is dead :()

Also Project Neytiri, which appears to be even more dead :( :(

If you consider ANY 1 on 1 lesson by any Na'vi-knowing member with any other member, then yeah, It's still going. but the hype is gone, and whatnot.

NgayNume died because of lack of leadership planning. It just kinda fell apart. Also, the domain projectngaynume.com needed to be renewed and I told Seze that he need not worry about renewing it due to the state of the project.

Interesting. I planned to buy a domain name for this server. A calendar for planning and Wordpress for information may give more visibility to this project. If you have suggestions...

Update notification :

I'll be buying and setting up the server today, in order to save time and start installing BigBlueButton, and learning on-the-fly how to configure it.  :)

I'm still hesitating between Debian and CentOS though.

Debian FTW! Way easier to configure and install packages on. Plus, its stabler and supports hardware better.

Yep, that's true. But the thing is that CentOS is as stable as Debian (RHEL inside) and is the most widely ran OS wen it comes to Apache web servers. Does not mean it is the best though. I'm letting myself today to decide.

Being somewhat of a geek, I prefer lighttpd over Apache  ;) much faster and responsive! Or maybe it is simply because I run my own "dedicated server" off of a dilapidated Pentium 4 with 512 MB memory and Lubuntu and a connection with only ~1 Mbps upload.  :(

Yeah, I can't see Apache reactive on this actually, it's quite heavy. Yet...

Update notification :

I have got the server running BigBlueButton now. It seems to start working well, although some services such as Webcam, voice and document uploading do not work. So I'm looking into the manuals to understand how this thing work.

Okay! Cool! I'll have to download the client later.

No client is required. Only a web browser with the latest Flash Player. :)

I'm actually thinking about placing a Wordpress site above this Bbb thing. A web page with a presentation and the possibility to offer several classrooms would be good. Other pages could clearly list projects and documents available, making them more easy to access and download.

*going to read Wordpress manual as well*

Tsmuktengan

Here are the screenshots of the server running for a crash test Na'vi classroom. It runs perfectly fine.  :)

I do not have a domain name yet. I'm looking to find a good na'vi name for that. Iknimaya.lu is already registered.  ???

More news as soon as possible (starting again computing school).

Irtaviš Ačankif

I have tukru.tk - just give me your DNS settings. Maybe I can set it up as vitrautral.tukru.tk  ;D

I recommend Dot TK. You can configure any DNS you want there, and best of all, the domains are free!
