Hey guys! Not too long ago, I found several sources which listed all the spoken Na'vi from the Avatar movie. I thought it was a little disappointing that the official subtitles (containing 83 Na'vi transcriptions) excluded so much of the dialog. I really liked resources for this reason. From this point, I figured it was obvious that someone would take one of the following and turn it into a subtitles file to play during the movie. It seems I was the only one that thought this.

To my surprise, after many hours of searching around the web and various communities, I was unable to find such a project. I decided to take it upon myself to take these transcriptions and actually turn it into a usable subtitle file. It took me roughly 5 hours, but I finally got a product that I feel is ready to share with the community. Below, you can see the entire SRT-formatted subtitles. As you can see, I took the 83 official movie subtitles and combined it with all of the dialog I found on those resources and got more than twice the number of subtitles.

Now, I will be the first one to say that these are not perfect. Both by the fact that I probably made various mistakes, and the fact that these translating projects are imperfect, contribute to this fact. This is the lovely thing about communities; it can only get better. I have actually watched the movie with these subtitles and it made me nothing less than giddy.

Try out the subtitles, add in missing lines, correct my mistakes, and enjoy! I look forward to hearing what you guys think.

Edit: I have sifted through omängum fra'uti's subtitles added a few lines that I was missing. (shockingly, I had a few lines he didn't as well)  I also found several spelling and grammatical errors which I corrected as well. I've uploaded a new version of the subtitles; you can download them below.

Thanks! Let me know if you notice anything wrong while watching and I'll be sure to fix it.

Thanks for the cookie. ;-)

Please don't provide instructions that require a pirated copy of the movie.  (For example see what I did in this other thread for playing off the DVD)

I apologize for that. I in no way wished to condone the piracy of the movie.

It is also interesting that you brought that thread to my attention. I actually did not find it when I was doing my Googling on the topic and found it right after posting this thread. It is actually a very similar original concept; I suppose the only difference is that it does not include all the English translations. Hopefully, despite the fact that you actually did a more complete job of gathering the Na'vi dialog, some people find the inclusion of both languages helpful.

Perhaps it may be possible to combine our efforts and provide two versions of the subtitles?

omängum fra'uti

Mine is based off the DVD where the english subtitles for most the Na'vi dialog are included as part of the video and can't be removed, vs the blu-ray where ALL subtitles are part of the subtitle track.  So there's less of a need for the English subtitles to be included.  But it wouldn't be hard to copy the timecodes and add an English line.  With the format I use, it can even be in a different font, and positioned differently.

However I don't have any BD player which supports external subtitles.  (I've heard PowerDVD 10 can use subtitles, but I haven't had a chance to get it.  Supposedly Media Player Classic can do BD, but I haven't been able to get it to work.)

Well, that is what I was talking about in my original post. The official subtitles translate 83 lines of the na'vi dialog. Being that my version has roughly 170 and your copy actually has over 200 spoken verses in the movie, there is clearly a lot of translations missing. That was the real only purpose for me making mine; to have the english translation for all the dialog. Being that all the na'vi was as easy as a copy and paste due to those sources, I figured it was just a nice little bonus.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you use to create your subs? I used a program called Aegisub which served my purpose greatly. Although, when I open your subtitle files they are not fully supported. I believe the native format of Aegisub is .ass, where as yours were in ssa. (I assume they are very similar for obvious reasons)

omängum fra'uti

Yes, .ass and .ssa are pretty much the same.  I believe .ass is actually supposed to be a superset of .ssa (Substation Alpha, the predecessor to Aegisub) so I'm actually surprised that Aegisub doesn't support everything.

I used VisualSubSync, but it also doesn't support all the features I use, so I have a shell script that I run after which adds the finishing touches (Reformatting first characters, fixing up some others, etc).  Every program that I've tried playing them back in has had no problem with it though.  It also doesn't do video or previews, just audio.  But that was good enough for my uses.

Ahhh, yes, that makes sense than. Aegisub can read the file fine, although it does not support the formatting of the first characters and actually puts a little sunshine symbol before and after the first letters.

Any chance you could export your subs as an SRT? I would love to run down and see how yours and mine compare. And if you don't mind, I'd love to add in some of the lines which mine is missing. Yours have between 30-40 extra lines that mine doesn't have; this is curious to me since I watched the movie with mine and it seemed fairly complete. I browsed through yours a bit (is tough with the formatting) and it seems that you have a lot of background voices of sub-characters.

omängum fra'uti

I just downloaded Aegisub and loaded in the video preview with my subtitle files and it looks properly formatted to me.

If you save it as a srt, it should strip out the formatting and just give the text, since srt doesn't do formatting.

Using an mkv != piracy necessarily. There are many, many good reasons why one might want to dump the video from their own, legally-bought DVD or BD as an mkv - this here being one of them. However, this server being based to America, home of some of the most ridiculous laws that are taken seriously, I'll respect your not wanting to discuss it for fear of legal issues. I just want to let you know where I stand on this.

Thanks for the subtitles, GCTHawk7; I'll try them now.

EDIT: Yeah, they work great with the BD, irayo! Lu ngaru set kuki!

I actually found a way to make omängum fra'uti's subtitles legible in Aegisub. Went through and added a few of the lines that I was missing. First post is updated with a new version of the SRT.  :D

I read part of that subtitles. Good work. Byt I have few questions:

Thanks for looking through them for mistakes! Although, I had already caught and fixed that one. It was fixed in the newest copy of the subtitles at the bottom of the post.

I have updated the links so that both of them link to the newest subtitles. I also updated the (spoiler) tag script, I must have forgotten to update that when I posted the newer version.

Thanks again. :)

Hi, i can see this is a old post but considering the upcoming second movie i've started rewatching the first one, would it be possible to also have an update for the extended version? thanks in advance :palulukan:
