I've added a section to the Pronunciation Guidance page on the Learn Na'vi wiki (http://wiki.learnnavi.org/) covering the alveolar flap and trill.  I've added some of the advice and suggestions from this thread to that page.

Maybe it's just me, but when Neytiri says "Nari" to Jake, the "r" makes almost a "d" sound. Would I be correct in saying that?

Just a comment on the diff tween r and rr :

A tap/flap is made by actively flicking your tongue against the roof of your mouth. In some languages it rises upward and taps the roof, like an English /d/ but quick; in others it flicks outward and strikes the roof on its way down. That's why Spanish pero and US English pedal sound rather different, though both are covered by the IPA letter [ɾ]. (There is no language on Earth that contrasts these two ways of doing this, so the IPA didn't bother to create separate letters for them.)

A trill, on the other hand, is made by holding your tongue in position, and letting it passively vibrate as your breath passes over it. You need to get the tension in your tongue just right in order for it to trill; too much or too little and it won't move. That is, taps/flaps use active articulation, trills, passive. Think of making that BBR! sound when you're cold, or blowing s.o. a raspberry: you're not actively moving your lips or tongue that fast, they just do it on their own because of the air passing by them.

I love the R.  It's one of the most aesthetically pleasing phonemes to me.

The 'r' sound, to me, sounds like a cross between a Japanese ra/ri/ru/re/ro (as in when Neytiri says 'nari' and Jake mispronounces it like many foreign speakers do with Japanese r's :D) and the Spanish rolled 'r', like in rojo or pero (as in when Neytiri says 'ikran').

Zoe Saldana is fluent in spanish, so her r's probably sound more like the spanish r I guess.

I still cant do it but im trying every day. i can do it when i say "ladder" (sounds stupid but it works) over and over again whilst getting faster but i cant carry it on for any length of time.
But hopefully my persistence will pay of and soon i will be able to trill my "rr"

Yanatan

The 'rr' - the trill - is unequivocally the most difficult sound for me to make. All of the other Na'vi sounds I have no trouble with. :-\ I did manage to 'get' the very beginnings of it a day ago, and progress is a little slow.

I'm practicing mainly by repeating 'vrrtep', 'krr' (sometimes helps to use 'lekrr' instead), and larger phrases including them (I'm particularly fond of "Nga lu levrrtep, ma oeyä tsmuke": My sister, you are demonic). Also 'burrito' ;).

When you say anything with a rolled r in it, all you have to do is touch the roof of your mouth, relax your tongue, and blow out air in a puff. It works if you practice, but don't concentrate on just the rr part of the sentence, or it will sound like "pudrr" instead of "prr".
Remember to make the noise on the roof of your mouth, not the cheater way in the back of your throat.

it's almost like a (t)th sound. just say the word, such as nari, like na'i, and then, instead of ('), say a REALLY soft (t). there. haha ;)
Pure white would be disturbing. :)
