Ew...
« on: October 07, 2011, 08:36:38 pm »
I am having problems with the correct pronunciation of ew in certain words. Tiwew is the one that always gets me. I have seen a few different explanations on how to pronounce it. I appreciate any help.

Irayo!

sure bout that? i believe the first w is a consonant and that the ew at the end is dipthong.

I'm still a little foggy on the dipthong thing and how to correctly pronounce it.

it's like the single-syllable combination of two vowels gradually one into the other.

e->u ~= ew

going from short e to long u in a continuum will yield a diphthong. make it quicker and you have ew.

I have heard this other way of explaining ew, that is, to say "Edward" and then remove the first d and then end up saying "Eward" then take off ard to say "Ew".

Notably, ew is the least common diphthong, as well as the least common Na'vi phoneme :)

Just remember to keep the e sounding like eh and never ay/ey.  It's a common pronounciation mistake.

It appears the [æu] instead of [au] is happening more frequently in American English, not just where you're at ;)
