According to wikipedia, ä is the sound in german drehen. Check out the example recording if you have not done so already: Near-open front unrounded vowel

The page is unclear though as to whether that is Bernese German or Standard German so I'd be wary of that.

Also, as the wikipedia IPA for German page doesn't list that sound as a sound in German I'd imagine that it is actually Bernese German only.

The audio sample is still a good resource either way though.

Okay, don't have much time so there's only another version of "kaltxì ma tsmukan oel ngati kameie" and a typical use of "bist" (the sentence is "Du bist mein Freund") I don't get that ì sound from bist. That doesn't sound like the one in the downloadable vocabulary mp3 (ex. Mì). At least for me... btw the clicking between the two parts is my space key!

Took a look at the "ä" sound sample: It's definitvely not my German, I'd pronounce "drehen" much different than this. But it's somewhat like "Käse", though not exactly.

The i in bist sounds like ì to me, but you're pronouncing the ì kaltxì differently from bist, you're pronouncing the ì more like e.

Yeah, that's what I mean. I can't separate the sound. I tried to listen to Frommer's message (especially to "sì") but so far, less success :(
But the "ngati" is now better than before? I really need to concentrate on that because I'll tend to pronounce it with a g-part. Somtimes I even make ngato of it...

why does everyone say kamEYey?? it is supposedto be KA-meh-ee-eh, which ends up soundling like KAmehyeh

I know that almost everyone would say kame as KAmeh (correct)
instead of kaMEH

and I guess that when you put <ei> in kame-->kameie, people have a tendency to turn KAme into kaMEie...

just sayin that original stress in a verb never changes no matter which infix you put in there. :D

I caught myself stressing the <ei> in kameie just the other day... I think because that is how Saldana/Neytiri pronounces it when she greets Eytukan early in the movie.

yes...actor fail...in the move, quite ironically, there are many pronunciation errors..

breakdown of kameie:

KAH-meh-ee-eh <for Americans/English>
KAH-mè-i-è <for the French>

hope this makes sense. :D

bommel

Okay, irayo.
Can imagine what both sound like, although my French 's a bit rusty ;)

Also, don't forget those unaspirated consonants  ;D

Do not give up. Speaking and listening exercise is very important if you want to speak Na'vi. Idk bout you, but I think that speaking Na'vi is much more fun than just reading and writing it. ;)

We at LN.org only want to build you up with encouragement and constructive criticism..concerning the Na'vi language and speaking it. No one here is perfect, and no one is a know it all, because the language is not even complete yet...but there are a good few things that we do know. and as far as those, we all would like to help. :D

bommel

Nah, I don't want to give up speaking. It's just I have no clue about forming phrases etc. so I must do some grammar stuff next. I'll continue training my pronunciation :)

It's probably best to get the pronunciation down first/in parallel though, otherwise, as you learn the grammar, you'll say things to yourself and build up bad habits.

I haven't thought of that although I know that problem from learning an instrument (own experience). Irayo :)
