Hey, this has been bothering me, and I'm wondering how many other's noticed. I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, as I'm only just beginning.

When Jake first shows up on Toruk, Moat says "Toruk Maktau" instead of Toruk Makto. Is this an error, or a different word, or are my ears just messed up?

No I heard the same thing last time I saw the movie. That was one of two things that really caught my attention about the Na'vi stuff.

I was wondering if it had something to do with the fact that it seemed she was asking a question, or that she was surprised. I really really hope it wasn't just the actress mispronouncing it

yes, she did say something like 'toruk maktaw' and she said it slowly and she was zoomed in, so, there is no question about it...

maybe it was just an effect of her being surprised (you could say 'tarukk maktaa' if you were scared for instance:) ), but i don't think so, she said it very clearly and very calmly.

I have heard it more often than just her saying it.
When at the other clans, they say "Maktoko"... assuming meaning the same as ride out, or ride together.
However, "Kämakto" means ride out, and "Maktohu" means ride with.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I think we're just supposed to assume that she was asking a question, inflection can often times change the sound of the word.

As far as different clans saying makto differently I think it would be safe to say that different clans would have different dialects so the vocab could be changed around.

I would say so as well, however it is the horse clan, and the ikran clan both saying the same thing. Tsu'Tey says it later on during the attack as well.

Perhaps in those cases they weren't actually giving the title, but just saying something?

I guess it's a form that we don't know yet. Perhaps it adds more force behind it?

Am I the only one who thaught "Are we talking about Eytukan here" when reading the Thread-title? It is really missleading. But maybe thats just me being influenced by Robert

I did not want to state thet explicitly

but I did wonder about that as well. I mean Mo'at is supposed to be ta native so this can not be a grammatical mistake (at least not on purpose)

heh, I phrased the title very carefully to attract attention, I'm actually surprised it worked so poorly

yes, I'm very concerned that it's just a mistake that slipped past cameron/frommer

but even if it is, If they realize it now they can't always add a new rule or something to explain it

I thought she said it like this Makto-oh and i presumed that extra "oh" was a grammatical thing i hadn't learned yet

I still believe it is there to make it a more powerful statement. In Japanese they add a "yo" at the end of a sentence when they want it to sound strong, maybe the Na'vi have a similar infix to use when a word needs a bit more oomph.
