Q

How do they do the noises? Seriously! Like, I can growl and snarl, but I don't sound NEARLY as viscous. Comments? Insults? Insights?

What? Do you mean the cat hiss that they do? I just do a loud cat hiss in the back of my throat. The only sound I can't seem to make well is Neytiri's animal calls and sounds.

shiaru

They use sound editing for part of the stuff in the movie not everything actually comes from the actors.

Most growls need to come from the diaphragm. So when you growl you need to find the deepest note you got and practice airing it out as you growl. Try to trill using your throat, kinda like the Chewie sound, but with a much higher frequency and aired out.

The yelps and animal calls use head sounds. Best way to practice is try to find a really high note that doesn't sound like its coming from your nose, then as you make the sound open your vocal chords like your going to say something, but keep it has a head sound. Really kinda hard to explain it since I don't know many of the words Vocal Coaches use x.x

Thanks for the info! Just what I needed. :D

Don't be afraid to try for deeper sounds thet emanate from the throat, and use your lungs & diaphragm to push that sound out.

Unfortunately, for some things, you'll just need Foley sound editors to live in your tonsils.  :D

The unasked question here, I think, is can animal sounds be represented with words? The answer is, (IMHO) is to use the closest sounds that match phonetically. But our clunky language systems (all of them!) do not even come close to describing most animal sounds. I can do a very good lion roar (good coaches, and they let me roar with them, now), but I would be hard-pressed to describe it on paper.

(perhaps this warranted another topic instead of posting on a 2009 topic)

I also think we are in need of animal sounds nìna'vi. The only ones we have are the madeup ones from Le'eylan's prezis about Palulukan:

I think that "oink" "moo" "cluck" "grr" "roar" etc are pretty close. I heard these equivalents in Japanese...O.o I would have NEVER guessed that they were animal Onomatopoeias...

These aren't even close to animal Onomatopoeias. They are descriptive words we have come up to describe different animal sounds. We have 'oink' for pigs, for instance, but the real sould hardly sounds like a pig. But if you say 'oink', we associate this in our mind with the real sound a pig makes.

'Roar' is pretty loose term. There are som many different animals that roar, and every roar is distinctly different. Even among animals of the same species, roaring can be quite different (and I can easily tell our lions apart by their roar).

Next time you visit a zoo or a farm, listen carefully to animal sounds, and you will know what I mean.

Often onomatopoeia sounds vary in their accuracy to the actual sound created. For example, check out this list of Japanese onomatopoeias (use Na'vi pronunciation and you wont be far off): http://www.xamuel.com/examples-of-japanese-onomatopoeia/

The best example: gulu = (grrr). "Gulu" doesn't sound a thing like a "grrrrr" sound to me but that's what their culture has gotten used to. Thus, I think it would make a lot of sense for Na'vi to have similar things. Some sounds match the sound fairly well (such as kxangangang) and others would not.

P.S. Epic resurrection is epic but I'm happy to continue this discussion.
