Kaltxì, ma smuk

Another piece of fun similar to the Favorite Na'vi word thread: what do you find to be the weirdest Na'vi word(s) when spoken aloud?  My couple of words are txe'lan and na'rìng — real trippy ones considering where the glottal stop is located XD

Set, pivlltxe ngeyä (ay)lì'u, and have fun with it :)

Muzer

For some reason, at one point I was trying to pronounce "fngap" and "sngel" with a y sound after the ng (too lazy to find the IPA :P) - not quite sure why.
[21:42:56] <@Muzer> Apple products used to be good, if expensive
[21:42:59] <@Muzer> now they are just expensive

kewnya txamew'itan

Both a and e are front vowels, they're probably dragging the ng forwards to a palatal [ ɲ ] like the Spanish ñ which sounds sort of ny-y.

That said, fngap and sngel do both sound strange normally.

I have no idea why, but I can never pronounce rr sounds when they come after an ll.

You mean in words like "lrrtok"?

Anyway, while you brought up this thread (and this has been hanging around on my mind for a while...)

Weirdest consonant clusters in Na'vi: tst and tstx, as in the words tstew and tstxo.  Even st/stx is easier to enunciate :P

I think it very much depends on one's native language (just as probably everything about pronunciation). For instance, ts is a normal russian sound (Ц), so I don't think any russian speaker has troubles pronouncing that. However, there is no ng sound in Russian and therefore it creates problems for me, especially in words like nìngay.

Kinda off-topic, but you should see the insane consonant clusters that can sometimes appear in Swedish. For example, "stskt" is perfectly legal.
We learn from our mistakes only if we are made aware of them.
If I make a mistake, please bring it to my attention for karma.

Just a personal feeling – to name something 'harmonious' that has a glottal stop in it, i.e. me'em, sounds kind-a counter-harmonous to me :P where we have so harmonously floating words like meoauniaea and soaia, etc.

edit: corrected a misspelling

I can pronounce me'em in a way that makes the glottal stop sound like part of the harmoniousness.

me`em is a beautiful word, as it is perfectly symmetrical. Things that are symmetrical tend to have a natural harmony about them.

All valid points ;)
As I said it's more of a personal opinion – sound is a very subjective thing ;)
I never took it from the symmetrical approach ... but then again, that's from the written word. ;)

I have to say these are difficult for me, too. In French we don't have anything like that, so I'm not very used to it =P

A very cool word to pronounce is kllkxem. I find it kinda difficult, but when you get it right it really sounds beautiful. :)

Sran, weird consonant clusters can exist in Swedish, Russian and other languages, but are still very weird morphemically speaking :P

This can also happen with PN, non-homorganic NP, PP, and even homorganic NF combinations, where N is a nasal consonant, P is a plosive (stop) consonant, and F is a fricative consonant.  Also, it seems as if there's this brief, non-syllabic epenthesis (e.g. the {t} in the {ns} combination that ocurs in English, or there may be a very slight vowel sound that arises from in between a PN sequence, but is really meaningless).  With PP, where both plosives are voiceless, if there seems to be some "vowel epenthesis", it is even less noticeable because the vowel is voiceless, and perhaps even inaudible.

Another word that fits the line of discussion here is tsngan, 'meat'. It has a lot in common sonically with the aforementioned sngel.

A brief perusal of this section of the dictionary (from which I determined I had tsngan spelled wrong to begin with, had thought for a long time it was simply tsnga) also reveals tsngal 'cup' and tsngawvìk 'cry' which isn't quite as weird, but still rather unconventional.

very little pronunciation difference between sngel and tsngal.

...is the craziest word in my opinion, and that's why I chose it for my Na'vi name <3

I really love all the crazy consonant clusters in Na'vi. I reckon those words sound like simlish a little xD Yeah, I played to much Sims as a 14-year-old.
