What do you people think everybody needs to learn if they are going to join the perm tribe
I think
-basic science (up to grade 10 grade the high the better.)
-basic hunting or fishing (just have to know a bit about these done it a few times ither one)
-basic wood working (or a tech class)
-basic sowing or weaving (just need to know how to do it generaly)
-basic food preperation (learn to cook its not hard)
-basic medical knowledge (first aid certificat)
-basic knowledge of common edible and useful plants (just learn a few)
-extensive knowledge of wilderness survival (read the SAS survial guide its really good )

what do you think we need to add to this list of things to learn???

I don't really know what else should be added to the list yet, but I plan on taking actual classes or something along those lines so when the time comes, I'll be ready and may be able to teach others.

I have nothing to add however I don't tihnk it should be necessary for all those things to be ESSENTIAL before you can join. Think of all the people who dropped science in favour of literature etc. And for the people who live in cities who have never been hunting before.

Maybe we go by the principle of at least 5 or 6 out of the 8.

I like the idea of having people learn things before we get out there, but I also would support the idea of having a group of gurus teach the rest of us certain things about the world around us ^_^ Just a thought. I mean, half of the fun of knowing things is to teach others what you have learned so that everyone is bettered by the experience.

I think that the list you have now is perfect as it is ^_^

Yes, I agree that not everybody should be required to know everything off the bat. Just as long some of us know some of this stuff then we could be taught/teach others.

but everybody should know a bit of these things because that just seems ilogical for a group of untrained people to wander off into the woods with only like a few people that actualy know stuff like. I can see no way that would go wrong. (sarcasm)

-extensive knowledge of wilderness survival.

I watch Bear Grylls on TV. Does that count??

Hehe just kidding, your list seems pretty solid. I recommend that where you have "medical knowledge" - make that into an official First Aid Course Certification card.

Nothing spells SAFE like documentation.

Yes, I agree with this completely. We all need to know at LEAST something about everything. And those of us who have more knowledge in other areas can teach and guide the others until everybody pretty much knows everything.

Yeah, before we get settled, we should prolly set up several classes, run by the experts in that category.

For example, Unil Txep (correct me if I'm wrong) would lead a basic medical care class.

I've decided that I am going to look into plants and animals, as like a hobby, so by the time this kicks off, I should be able to teach people how to recognize and avoid dangerous plants & animals.

Well you should wait until we chose the place. But good idea I already know most of the plants in ontario and that area and its animals.

Yeah, like I said in my first post, I plan on starting to take classes for ALL of this if possible as soon as possible. I'd really to see us make more progress on the location first though, before I start committing that kind of time and money.

I'm doing it as a hobby, so it's just general knowledge. Obviously, I'll read up more specifically on where we've chosen once we've chosen.

I'm gonna see if I can find a way to do the full year course. It's a tad pricey though :(. I might go and observe a class first.

We would be there longer than Jake was with Neytiri. 9 months would deffinatley be enogh time to gain a few skills in survival.
