At first, I was a skeptic about these things, but looking through the website, I love them. They seem like the perfect alternative to hand built objects, are built to be practically 360º wind-resistant, and aren't on the ground. I would seriously consider getting one of these, even if it was decided the full tribe wouldn't use this as the base for the building design. So, am I alone on this and making another bad decision, or does anyone else support this?

You're not the only one ma tsmukan. ;D And if not them, something like that other hanging one I posted. Either way I'm dedicated to living in the trees somehow, someway. :)

I'd love to have a sphere! If it's decided that every member can decide on what they want, I'm definitely going with that. ;D

Maybe if raising funds for starting the tribe goes particularly well eh, quick, someone win the lottery :D

Okay, I'm not in the tribe and I'm sorry to interrupt you discussion but I googled what those spheres are and I have to say they're AWESOME. Thanks for posting about them ^^

There, carry on now

Wow, ^^^ that's a first.

Hey look, a poll.

Okay, 3:1 majority, so it looks like we could be using these.

I want to point out that I'm not sure if we'll be able to afford these sorts of things, but I sort of like the idea.
I would prefer to build my own.

I think building our own would be a better idea in the first place. Importing them really doesn't fit the spirit of the tribe... of course, I don't know how difficult it would be to build one...

Depends to what standard you wanted to repliucate, the sphere is not exactly the easiest shape to create especially when you have no idea or the skills in which to go about constructing them, buying them would also not exactly be cost effective, but they are cool :D

Fnua is correct, spheres are quite difficult to create,
especially if you don't have the right materials,
offcourse survivalists will know how to create these things, but that will take a time, actually,
I think this would be the coolest,
create our spheres by ourselves,
everyone helps building eachothers spheres one by one.
If one is ready the person of which it belongs to can move in already.

Warning
Everyone will need basic instructions though, and the less handy people should back off, and gather materials instead. :p

By the way, Txonari, you're not afraid of some work are you? ;-)
A really native tribe does everything by itself,
we'd still be getting some specialised help from outside, they don't, so we should surely be able to do this

We still need a location that we can focus on, have there already been suggestions?

Well, some work, yes. But this work is benefiting the tribe, so no! :D

Yeah they would be great! Although $150,000 just for the wood shell....

Remember, you don't necessarily have to buy it. I think we could build them with enough work, and simply base the design off of them. Personally, I like Mìhìl's idea.

yeah I personally would love to have our own made shelter, but I don't think a sphere might be the best idea simply because of the sheer difficulty in making a perfect sphere, and if it wasn't perfect the structural weaknesses could make it fall apart in a rough storm for example, and I don't fancy being in one then. :D

Maybe something simpler?

True, it would be difficult initially. But, they figured out how to make them, and they're handcrafted. So if they can do it, we should be able to, as well. But, just a thought. I agree, something simpler would be easier to build.

Eywayä lì'u

Even though they are handcrafted, they still have the use of modern electrical tools, we're not going to have such a luxury. Maybe we could make something more simple and more temporary, like a dug-in hut with hammocks or something, and stay in that until we have perfected it?

Also a good point. However, I still think it's too early to be making decisions for shelters. We still have no idea exactly what kind of environment we'll be dealing with.

Here's another style of unorthodox treehouse I stumbled upon, and posted in the other buildings thread. Might be worth looking into.

Albeit not completely natural, it's got a metal frame. Though the metalcrafters among us might be able to make them before we settle (and could be maintained by those who choose a more eco-village/technologically liberal lifestyle), which we can finish with on-site materials. If we don't want to weave them, I'm sure there's other ways we could cover them.
