Well, horses are out of the question. So, say we need to get a fairly long distance in a relatively short amount of time. How would we do that? That's what we figure out here. Options can expand anywhere from a bike to stilts, but we may want something that increases speed and doesn't require daily feeding. So, all I can really think of right now is bikes or running shoes. So, discuss it here.

Everything needs feeding in one way or another. Bikes need wheels and repairs, horses/other animals need food, cars or similar technology stuffs need fuel and repairs. If you need this, you should look at how they're fed, and choose one that will feed in a way which you can manage without excessive influx of "modern" materials.

Well, considering cars need petrol unless we're going to have another readily available source as well as regular maintenence which can be expensive. Bikes have the same deal although cheaper, but would still need regular maintenence and the abililty to fix them if they broke.

So...looks like running. ^^ fun.

We are going to be staying in one particular area, for this I don't think that we need any other transportation than our feet. Granted there should be some vehivles for transport in the eco-village, but in the tribe I don't think we need any :)

Before tackling transport options we really need to know where we will be. Our location (terrain, vegetation, &c.) will make a big difference as to what is viable, although I think we can afford to anticipate some sort of forest.

Just to throw the old Location issue in there  ;).

We can't have cars because cars need gasoline, which is quite expensive and won't be readily available in the middle on nowhere.  Also repairs will be difficult, since there really won't be a way to tow them anywhere.

Bikes, there's still the problem with repairs.  Tires and stuff cost money too.

A problem with both of them is that they will create unnatural trails and stuff that could kill plants that the natural wildlife needs to eat.

Not all cars need gasoline.

Not so sure that running shoes would be the best idea, sooner or later they would end up as unusable. I'd go for either bare feet/ thin sandles, it worked really well for the Tarahumara. Their average distance for running almost non stop is something like 100 miles I think.

Just a quick question, where would we be travelling to?

I think a mocosin sort of shoe would be good.

We would be running to hunt and gather and stuff

well when it comes 2 maintenance and fixing things i am a mechanic and pretty good at fixing anything mechanical so thats not a problem

Id say bare foot would be the better option, once your feet develop a calluss on the bottom of them youd be able to use them more, and small sticks and stones that would usualy cut a persons foot would do hardly any harm so betterr start waking around the place with nothing on your feet so when the time comes you wont have too many problems out woop woop. (being Australian is also a major head start in not wearing shoes :P)

Hmmm, parkour seems like a good way of looking at it :P.

No but seriously, we will need at least one car if you ask me :P. Here's the thing though, I think we're looking at an efficient vehicle here, not a 100 litre per kilometre here (Convert those units in any way you want to look at it)

parkour has been brought up before and as a practitioner (albeit a bad one) of rural parkour, i can tell you that it would be a pointless venture. you may as well run as do parkour. the only useful moves from parkour would be tacs and vaults.

parkour is much more suited to urban areas rather than rural (although it is possible)

Very good point. I am just starting in it, and actually the cats could also be useful...depending where we're trying to go of course :P

i also dont think parkour would be played out 2 well while being bare foot. i think it might me more stressful on our feet and bones without the added support that the shoes provide

actually, it's been proven scientifically that running without shoes is better for your bones that with shoes.

I envoke rule 32 of the internet (if you dont know what it is, it is pics or it didnt happen)

and running without shoes when you dont have calluses would be murder on your feet, although it would be a way to develop them i would advise against it, pure for teh fact that if your running and you step on a piece of broken glass you could get gangreen and die ! (woo for pessemists)

Why is it that I always end up arguing?

anyways, i've been taking my dogs for walks without shoes for years.  And once I went backpacking with a friend and she kept laughing and saying that I was a hobbit because I didn't wear shoes unless I absolutely had to. I've never stepped on glass.
And bear in mind that we will be in the middle of nowhere, where there won't be any glass.

I wasnt arguing i was asking for you to prove your point and then putting down my own views on the matter ! and just because you can do it doesnt mean that everybody can, im sure that at least one perosn on here has never been camping or walked outside without shoes on.

you are very lucky not to step on glass cause it hurts like an absolute biatch (almost as much as dropping a knife in your foot, but thats another story). and granted there may not be glass but sharp rocks, thorns, other natural things that can peirce your skin.

It may sound as if im goin for having no shoes, the turth is im not, i think going bare foot would be awesome, its just not possible because we dont have calluses on our feet!

and as and afterthoughs afterthought, i think you got the wrong end of the stick (and so did i)

Tuteyä amuiä 'itan means that Parkour would be stressful on the bones, as it involves a lot of pressure on different parts of your feet and muscles that arent normally used are used, and this can cause problems.
