I'm sure some kind of meetup camp in the wild (whether to get to know each other or get to grips with the kind of lifestyle in the tribe, for those that aren't very wilderness aware) has been suggested before since this project was started (at least I seem to remember it was) but I'd like to suggest we have such a thing for those in the UK, others are welcome of course if they can afford the travel  ;D . As I had recently spent a week wildcamping in one of my favourite forests in the Brecon Beacons in Wales, it occured to me that the Brecon Beacons would make a great location for a meetup and tribal dry run! I'm just posting this here to see if anyone is interested and what kind of numbers to expect, and if there's enough interest I can get organising right away! So please post below if you're interested  :)

I don't think I would be able to, but a good idea. Just a side note; isn't Wales a bit on the wet side? :P
What equipment, supplies and people did you take? I like the idea of "wild camping" with the absolute minimum, but I'm not sure I'm up to it, for now.

Luckily whenever I've gone the weather has been decent, having light drizzle at most.

With equipment, I usually take the bare minimum, but enough so that you can live comfortably so as not to get annoyed with every little thing, i.e. Clothes, tent (hammock would be nicer but I seem to have a habit of waking up with at least a few spiders whenever I try it  ;D ) something to help start a fire such as a striker, some food and enough water to last more than enough (or if more than enough is too much weight, some purification tablets in case). Oh and a mobile phone for emergencies (not much else to do with it, no signal anywhere I've been), the older and more rugged the better!

as for people, I've never gone with more than 6 people, but group size isn't really that big a factor unless you've got a massive amount of people, like 10-15+

Oh and I almost forgot, I always take some recycling bags in case we have any waste such as tin cans (although I usually avoid anything like that, preferring to take lots of fruit due to no packaging)

SOunds like a great idea! Sign me up - and yes, there was a similar trip suggested about two years ago...sadly most of the members involved with that one have moved away from the boards.

Nice suggestion!

Depending on how many of us in the project are in the UK, or willing to come to the UK, I would say that we need probably 4 of us at least, for this to be worthwhile I think. But I suppose we could go ahead as long as there's more than one :D

Key'il, we don't have to do this particularly soon, so we could go when you feel ready?

I'll check for a good area for us to stay at in the time being, I'm a massive fan of the waterfall area of the Brecon Beacons, it's spectacular and packed with wildlife too, the only issue with that region is it has a lot of tourists due to the natural beauty, so we need to come to a decision whether to compromise the distance from civilisation or the beauty of the location, what do you guys think?

Also I need a rough idea of when everyone is available, these summer months are obviously most ideal but our date going is dependant on when everyone is available clearly :P so if everyone who is up for the trip could post when they are free that would be great!  :)

I am only NOT free on the week including the 18th of August. This is exam day in the UK, and when we find out if we are going to university or not.

Just commenting, unfortunately. Although things might change, I can't see doing any sort of camping trips for the foreseeable future.

Eywayä lì'u

aww well :( still have fun commenting :P

I hope some more people sign up, I can't see this being the best meetup in the world if it's just me and tonbogiri  ;D

It takes two to tango, but one hundred to make a decent broadway musical.

THomas R, 18th of August is the Thursday. I need to be available for the rest of the week, so the earliest I would be free would be the...22nd of August.

Perhaps, with september underway, we could set about organising a meetup in summer 2012. That leaves all sorts of interesting possibilities!

Definitely! Although we shall have to make it early summer as I shall be leaving to go live in Japan for a while in August!

I like the idea of a summer 2012 meetup. I currently reside in England, but that wouldn't stop me getting the train or something.
