I was out doing public astronomy last evening. Best conditions in a long time! I did see a couple of persieds, including one fairly bright one.

Last year, I was down in Pahrump, NV, taking care of my friend's animals while they travelled. No 'scope that time, so I just sat back in a comfy chair and watched Persieds fly by. I really enjoyed that, as I usually have an eyepiece in my face when I am out doing astronomy.

A full moon from Norway tonight :)
Took this image with a binocular, i turned my phone to night mode and the highest image quality, so you can see some details of the Moon, where the lunar mare is visible. It was a bit difficult to take the image because i had to focus the binocular while i was holding it.

Hate when that happens. In 2012, i was gonna watch the eclipse of the century, but then a bunch of clouds were in the way. I was gonna watch when the planet Venus was gonna transit across the Sun, infront of our planet. I got mad. I was then with an astronomy team atop a mountain outside my homecity. We were alot of people atop that mountain. Even a bunch of local military soldiers gathered atop there with us.

Here's an image. Bunch of clouds in the way!  >:(

Or, how about a webcast from a place with clear skies? You can watch this eclipse here http://www.stargazersonline.org/lunar_eclipse_10-08-14.html (link to the stream is in the first paragraph). This stream will be originating from the roof of our studio building. You might even hear me as one of the guests during the webcast's commentary!

Interesting, but since it will be cloudy, I will stay in the bed. Good luck!

Ma Vamataw, that video of the lunar eclipse from Mercury is rather interesting!

Here's a picture I shot yesterday of the partial solar eclipse we had here in much of the US.

I shot this with an inexpensive mylar filter offered by Eclipse Shades, placed on the end of the lens of DSLR camera. It was a 300 mm lens, fully zoomed out. The shot is handheld, but braced. The filter absorbs enough light that focus through the viewfinder was tricky. Also, we had clouds interfering with the eclipse, which made getting a fully-bright sun was a hit-and-miss proposition. I chose a slightly overexposed image for dramatic effect. You can see a group of sunspots about in the middle of the sun's crescent.

Please let me know how this displays on your computer. The image seems larger than it should be to me (it should not be big enough to invoke scroll bars, which it does on my computer.)

It's very big, but there is no additional scroll bar.

There are fans of astronomy! ;) It's very good, because I am amateur astronomer and astronomy (and astrophysics) is my the biggest hobby. I have 12 Inch Dobsonian telescope and I am fascinated by beauty of universe. My favourite astronomical objects are example Orion Nebula, Andromeda Galaxy, Pleiades, Hercules globular cluster, North America Nebula, Sombrero Galaxy, Lagoon Nebula and next. I observe night sky very often, but weather in central Europe is now very bad.  :(

Vawmataw

It's interesting. I only have a small telescope and the dark skies are a bit far from me.

Also I started with small telescope. I understand you, light pollution is big problem for astronomy :(. I live in the Prague, but I have relatively easily available regions with darker sky.  Fortunately.

Txantsan, ma Toliman!

I am also an active amateur astronomer. I have an 8 inch (203 mm) go-to Schmit-Cassegrain 'scope, and I just picked up an 8 inch Dobsonian 'scope. Like you, I like deep space stuff. Some of my favorite objects are the Veil Nebula (NGC 6960/6992/6995), the Double Cluster (NGC 869/884), the Leo triplets (M65/66 and M105), the helix nebula (NGC 7293) and Globular clusters, especially M22. I recently acquired a 17.5 inch (445 mm) F5 primary mirror (for free!) I hope to build a big dobsonian 'scope around. I'm lucky to have a reasonably dark sky where I live, and access to some really dark skies out here in the American west.

Smon nìprrte', ma `Eylan Ayfalulukanä!

I wish you succes during construction of 17,5 inch Dobsonian telescope. 17,5 inch is realy big primary mirror. I had occasion observe several galaxies by 500 mm telescope - it was unforgettable!!! Especially Whirlpool galaxy (M 51) was ,,as dream"! The difference contrasy to my 305 mm Dobsonian telescope was great.

A lot, of course, also depends on the quality of the mirror. I know this mirror was made by Coulter Optical, and the quality control on those mirrors tended to vary a bit. It is in a 'cassette' designed to be inserted into the tube assembly, and the cassette contains the mirror cell as well. Although the mirror is in good condition, I plan to send it off to a mirror specialist for testing and possible refiguring. If I am going to go through the considerable amount of trouble to build a 'scope, I am going to make sure I have a first-class mirror. I will also have them make a secondary for it, a service most mirror testers offer. There is also a local astronomer who is setting up to do Focault testing. If he can accommodate such a large mirror, I may be able to test it locally, and even participate in the process.

Our club also has a 20 and 24 inch dob. The 20 inch has been tricked out with a lot of accessories, including an equatorial tracking platform. The 24 inch is being upgraded to have digital setting circles. Its mirror is also in bad need of resilvering.
