Does anybody of you contribute to the Folding@home project? If you don't know what F@h is, please have a look at their website here (in short: they are doing some research on protein folding which relates to diseases like Huntington's disease or cancer and you can contribute to this project by offering your home computing power).

I'm quite active since a few weeks again because I have a new GPU (Geforce GTX 470) and it goes like hell ^^
However, as I am at my parents over holidays, I'm just using my two older rack servers for folding@home.

@mods: I don't know if this is the right category for this. If I'm wrong, feel free to move it.

Update: I've created a poll here

cool :)
It's not very complicated to install and it simply uses otherwise unused ressources.

Eana Tanhì

ok, I installed it... and now what?

Ehm... which one did you install? There are several versions depending on what you like to do (e. g. classic CPU, SMP, GPU, console client, graphical client, ...)

A good starting point is http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Guide

Edit: You probably want to start with the uniprocessor (classic) client. You can find the official guide here. The other clients use more system ressources and may slow down your computer from time to time (I'm using dedicated computers for folding@home)

ok, it works now ;D
great! :)
Completing a work unit takes some time, so don't worry. On my oldest active machine 1% takes about 20 min, my PS3 needs ~6 hours for one single packet and my GTX 470 2.5 hours.

it says 5/250 now... what will happen if i turn off my comp now?

Normally it will save its state. The client is creating checkpoints from time to time and will resume work from there when you turn it back on.

ok ;D
and irayo, I like this idea very much  ;)

Human No More

I have at times, primarily for stress/burn in testing, although I will admit I don't often since it tends to make my room too hot and use quite a bit of power... :(

oh yes, our cellar is a free degrees warmer now. But that's great because we have no heating system down there ;)

I got this on my PS3, didn't used it a lot, I think I only completed it once. ( On my PS3 when I turn it off and on, it has to start all over again )

It depends on the deadline of the WU. I am not quite sure atm but I think the deadline for a PS3 packed is somewhere near 3 days. I let it fold a packet over night and use "Turn off automatically" after the packet completes.

I was also was thinking this ^^  But a question, do we need 2 folding groups? One for PC and one for PS3? Or is it all in one or something...

No, you can run multiple clients under the same username.

It would be much funnier to fold in a group where you actually have a chance to be in the top20 PPD position, without having to deal with guys that have 500,000+ PPD

LearnNavi.org would be fine for me. Shall I create a group?

Edit: I will contact one of the admins because of use of name, logos, etc.
