Possible exomoon signal found

Strong hints have been found of a possible exomoon candidate orbiting a gas giant planet over 4,000 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus the Swan. Should the moon be confirmed later this year by the Hubble Space Telescope, it will be the first moon ever discovered around a planet beyond our Solar System.

The potential discovery has come from the Hunt for Exomoons with Kepler collaboration, which is led by David Kipping of Columbia University in New York. The project uses observations collected by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope, which watches for dips in starlight as planets cross, or 'transit', the face of their host stars and block some of the light.

The idea behind hunting for exomoons is that natural satellites should also cause a dip in the starlight, either just before or just after their parent planets transit. However, given the size of moons compared to their planets, the dip in light caused by an exomoon should be small and hard to discern, even for Kepler.

To even the odds, Kipping's team stacked together multiple 'light curves' (graphs showing how a star's light output changes over time while a planet is transiting it) for each of the 284 planets they were studying, looking for recurring dips that could be attributed to exomoons. They only found one strong candidate, accompanying the planet Kepler-1625b.

Astronomers Find First Evidence of Possible Moon Outside Our Solar System

The Hubble and Kepler space telescopes found evidence for what could be a giant moon accompanying a gas-giant planet that orbits the star Kepler-1625, located 8,000 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus. The moon may be as big as Neptune and it orbits a planet several times more massive than Jupiter.
If our solar system is a typical example, moons may outnumber planets in our galaxy by at least an order of magnitude or more. This promises a whole new frontier for characterizing the nature of moons and their potential for hosting life as we know it.

The exomoon at Kepler-1625b is too far away to be directly photographed. Its presence is inferred when it passes in front of the star, momentarily dimming its light. Such an event is called a transit. However, the "footprint" of the moon's transit signal is weaker than for the host planet.
The researchers caution that the moon's presence will need to be conclusively proven by follow-up Hubble observations.

"Moon Forming" Circumplanetary Disk Discovered around Young Planet in Distant Star System

Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have made the first-ever observations of a circumplanetary disk, the planet-girding belt of dust and gas that astronomers strongly theorize controls the formation of planets and gives rise to an entire system of moons, like the one found around Jupiter.

This young star system, PDS 70, is located approximately 370 light-years from Earth. Recently, astronomers confirmed the presence of two massive, Jupiter-like planets in orbit around the star. This discovery was made with the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT), which detected the warm glow naturally emitted by hydrogen gas accreting onto the planets.

The new ALMA observations instead image the faint radio waves given off by the tiny (about one tenth of a millimeter across) particles of dust around the star.

The ALMA data, combined with the earlier optical and infrared VLT observations, provide compelling evidence that a dusty disk capable of forming multiple moons surrounds the outermost known planet in the system.

"For the first time, we can conclusively see the telltale signs of a circumplanetary disk, which helps to support many of the current theories of planet formation," said Andrea Isella, an astronomer at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and lead author on a paper published in the Astrophysical Journal, Letters.

Formation of exoplanetary satellites by pull-down capture

The large size and wide orbit of the recently announced exomoon candidate Kepler-1625b-i are hard to explain within traditional theories of satellite formation. We show that these properties can be reproduced if the satellite began as a circumstellar co-orbital body with the original core of the giant planet Kepler-1625b. This body was then drawn down into a circumplanetary orbit during the rapid accretion of the giant planet gaseous envelope, a process termed "pull-down capture." Numerical integrations demonstrate the stability of the original configuration and the capture process. In this model, the exomoon Kepler-1625b-i is the protocore of a giant planet that never accreted a substantial gas envelope. Different initial conditions can give rise to capture into other co-orbital configurations, motivating the search for Trojan-like companions to this and other giant planets.
