Not that I'm complaining, mind you.   ;)

Let's cut to the chase: people who eat more chocolate weigh less, and popcorn contains more antioxidants and fiber than fruits and vegetables.

So does that mean chocolate-coated popcorn is the new health food?   ;D

Regarding the chocolate study:

"A new government-funded study of nearly 1,000 healthy adults shows that people who frequently eat chocolate actually weigh less than those who say they eat it less frequently.

"Study researchers say that people who reported eating chocolate five times a week had a body mass index (BMI) about one point less, on average, than people who said they ate chocolate less frequently. For a woman who is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 125 pounds, one BMI point equals about five pounds.

"That's despite the fact that frequent chocolate eaters also reported eating more total calories and more saturated fat than people who ate chocolate less often."

Regarding the popcorn:

"Scientists report that popcorn, which is a 100% unprocessed whole grain, contains more of the highly healthy antioxidant substances called polyphenols than fruits and vegetables, if it isn't dipped in butter, oil or salt.

"The hulls of popcorn - the part that everyone hates for its tendency to get caught in the teeth - has been found to have the highest concentration of polyphenols and fibre. The levels of polyphenols rivaled those in nuts and were up to 15 times greater than whole-grain tortilla chips.

"Joe Vinson from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, who has been a pioneer in analyzing healthful components in chocolate, nuts and other common food items, presented these findings at the American Chemical Society's (ACS) scientific society on Sunday.

"Vinson said one serving of popcorn will provide more than 70% of the daily intake of whole grain needed by an adult.

.....

"Jyoti Arora, head of nutrition at Artemis Health Institute, said popcorn's high content of fibre makes it nutritious and healthy.

"Whole grains like popcorn are high in fibre that helps in relieving constipation and leads to weight loss, better blood sugar control besides keeping cholesterol levels under check," Arora said.

"Vinson, however, cautioned that the finding should not make people give up fruits and vegetables.

"Popcorn cannot replace fresh fruits and vegetables in a healthy diet. Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and other nutrients that are critical for good health, but are missing from popcorn," he added.

"Vinson explained that the same concentration principle applies to dried fruit, which holds a polyphenol edge over regular fruit.

"Previous studies found low concentrations of free polyphenols in popcorn, but Vinson's team conducted the first study to calculate total polyphenols in popcorn. "The amounts of these antioxidants were much higher than previously believed," he said."

YAY!   A no-brainer!  I'm there!!   Running to the kitchen for some high cacao-content chocolate now!  ;)

I've read about it this morning and I was like "Woooooooot?!". Maybe I should eat more chocolate now ;D

I gained most of the weight I now struggle with during a 10 year period when I did not eat chocolate due to a heart problem I sometimes have. My rate of weight gain has been far less since I started eating chocolate again, and I am finally starting to lose weight.

Popcorn? It helps keep me regular, but I really like the butter and salt. So, I will enjoy popcorn only occasionally, when I go to movies. We have popcorn one day a week here at the station, but only has oil from popping, and salt. The 'butter' we use on it is a flavor concentrate, and has little caloric value.

I am trying to remember what prime rib is high in. It is some trace element, either copper or molybdenum.

I'm not much of a sweet tooth and still have a high enough metabolism that I think I can continue to skip the chocolate for a while. But I have always loved popcorn so I will continue to eat that  ;D

I also saw in a recent episode of 60 Minutes an article about how toxic sugar can be, so don't get your chocolate with sugar ;)

Indeed, popcorn can't contain all of the nutrition that other veggies provide, especially those dark, leafy greens ;)

If most of popcorn's nutrition lies in the fibrous kernel, one has to wonder just how bioavailable the nutrients are.  Just because something contains nutrients doesn't mean the human body can actually make use of them.

I would imagine, since it is now popped that it is easier to digest and break down. And wouldn't popcorn be more like a sugar to the body? The good kind?

Human No More

I should eat more chocolate again, I've been eating a lot less recently in an attempt to lose a bit of weight, hasn't worked particularly well, only a little :(

As for popcorn, it's only perceived as bad due to commonly coming with salt or sugar. Minus that and it's not that much :P

Your body indeed treats it like a sugar, as the softer parts of popcorn are a starch. Popcorn has little nutritive value outside of fiber. Fresh corn isn't even all that good for you, due to its high starch content. Although thought of as a vegetable by most people, corn is actually a grain. When you add butter, popcorn becomes one of the absolutely worst kind of foods there is: a combination of carbohydrate and fat. Fats are meant to be eaten with protein, where they most naturally occur, and where the essential nutrients in fat then become available to the body. In any case, I will almost always gain a pound or two after a night at the moves (plus, it seriously 'breaks' a low-carb diet!). So, I try and see two, or even three movies at once to contain my strong desire for tasty buttered popcorn.

Recently, I came across a product called 'puffcorn', but out by the Cheetos folks, and featuring Chester Cheetah on the package. It is essentially Cheeots with butter flavor instead of cheese, and no hulls. Almost as good as popcorn. The package currently even has something nìNa'vi on the front: The price is listed as '$2 only'!

You've got that right !! There are two kinds of critters on this Planet.
Those that eat grass,

Those that EAT those that eat grass.
I'm one of the latter.
