comet Elenin is falling apart

The icy comet Elenin made its closest pass by the sun this month, but it may have come out of the event worse for wear, according to an Australian astronomer.
Images and video of comet Elenin recorded by amateur astronomer Michael Mattiazzo in Castlemaine, Australia, appears to show the object losing some cohesion in late August and early September as it neared its closest approach to the sun — a point in its orbit called "perihelion" — on Sept. 10.
The comet is officially known as C/2010 X1 Elenin, and was discovered in December by Russian astronomer Leonid Elenin.

stay tight everybody!!!!!!!!!!!

the sun has erupted an X-flare(actually two X-flares since 22nd of september)

News from spaceweather.com:
A coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetic field at approximately 12:15 UT on Sept. 26th. The impact caused significant ground currents in Norway. Also, the Goddard Space Weather Lab reports a "strong compression of Earth's magnetosphere. Simulations indicate that solar wind plasma [has penetrated] close to geosynchronous orbit starting at 13:00UT." Geosynchronous satellites could therefore be directly exposed to solar wind plasma and magnetic fields. Stay tuned for updates.

If the solar flare is very powerful, big areas can lose the power in a month, or over a month(If it harms the electricity very hard)

sunspot 1302 is the scientists watching most now, it produces a lot of solar flares. Yesterday it prodused an X-flare

today it produced a C-flare

from spaceweather.com:

Geomagnetic storm in progress

High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras. A strong (Kp=7) geomagnetic storm is in progress.

Earth's magnetic field has been strongly disturbed since approximately 1300 UT on Sept. 26th when a CME hit our planet. The impact strongly compressed the magnetosphere, exposing geosynchronous satellites to solar wind plasma, and ignited auroras around both poles. Gordon McLellan photographed these pastels over Lake Michigan after sunset on Sept. 26th:

picture from Lake Michigan:

Elsewhere in the United States, auroras have been sighted in New York, South Dakota, and Maine. More states will surely join the list as the night unfolds. Stay tuned.

SpaceX Unveils Plan for World's First Fully Reusable Rocket

The private spaceflight firm SpaceX will try to build the world's first completely reusable rocket and spaceship, a space travel method that could open the gates of Mars for humanity, the company's milionaire CEO Elon Musk announced Thursday (Sept. 29).

A fully reusable rocket would dramatically decrease the cost of lofting cargo and humans to space, making the exploration and colonization of other worlds such as Mars more feasible, Musk said in a speech at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Musk did not guarantee success, acknowledging the daunting task his SpaceX team has taken on. SpaceX released a video animation of its proposed reusable rocket and space capsule system to illustrate how it would work.

My comment: This looks very good :)

humans travelling to Mars, coming closer, soon can we travel to the red planet :D

It's very good news, and we thinking about to colonize Mars(maybe because of the population on Earth)

atmosphere of Mars contains more water, than expected

The upper atmosphere of Mars contains up to a hundred times more water than previously suspected, according to a new study that could change our understanding of the Martian climate, and could suggest that more water existed on the surface of the Red Planet in its early history.
Using data from the European Space Agency's Mars Express probe and NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, astronomers determined that water in the upper Martian atmosphere undergoes a process known as supersaturation — something astronomers thought could not occur on the dry, dusty planet.

Message from NOAA; WARNS ABOUT THE SUNSPOT 1302

Sunspot 1302, quiet now for three days, still has a 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field that harbors energy for X-class flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 30% chance of such eruptions today.

X-class flare is the most powerful class of flares, that can shut down electricity, and communication in big areas, across the globe. This is what scientists fears

new update about the sun from spaceweather.com:

n October 1st around 10:17 UT, widely-spaced sunspots 1302 and 1305 erupted in quick succession, revealing a long-distance entanglement which was not obvious before. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) recorded the double blast

Since it was launched in 2010, SDO has observed many "entangled eruptions." Active regions far apart but linked by magnetic fields can explode one after another, with disturbances spreading around the stellar surface domino-style. Yesterday's eruption appears to be the latest example.

The part of the eruption centered on sunspot 1305 hurled a coronal mass ejection toward Earth. The relatively slow-moving (500 km/s) cloud is expected to reach our planet on Oct. 4th, possibly causing geomagnetic storms when it arrives. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

Earth's first arctic ozone hole recorded

The high atmosphere over the Arctic lost an unprecedented amount of its protective ozone earlier this year, so much that conditions echoed the infamous ozone hole that forms annually over the opposite side of the planet, the Antarctic, scientists say.

"For the first time, sufficient loss occurred to reasonably be described as an Arctic ozone hole," write researchers in an article released Oct. 2 by the journal Nature.

Some degree of ozone loss above the Arctic, and the formation of the Antarctic ozone hole, are annual events during the poles' respective winters. They are driven by a combination of cold temperatures and lingering ozone-depleting pollutants

The reactions that convert less reactive chemicals into ozone-destroying ones take place within what is known as the polar vortex, an atmospheric circulation pattern created by the rotation of the Earth and cold temperatures. This past winter and spring saw an unusually strong polar vortex and an unusually long cold period.

This year's record vortex persisted over the Arctic from December to the end of March, and the cold temperatures extended down to a remarkably low altitude, the researchers write

At altitudes of about 11 to 12 miles (18 to 20 kilometers), more than 80 percent of the ozone present in January had been chemically destroyed by late March.

Astronomers Debate Where 1st Interstellar Starship Should Visit

If humans ever build an interstellar spaceship —a vehicle capable of reaching another star — one of the biggest questions will be which of the billions of stars in the Milky Way should it visit?

Scientists debated possible interstellar destinations at the 100-Year Starship Symposium, a weekend meeting here sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to discuss planning the first mission to another star system.

Among the top priorities for choosing a star to target is its potential to harbor life, said astrobiologist Jill Tarter of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute.

"It's really the story of life in the cosmos that is likely to drive exploration beyond the solar system," Tarter said."I think this is the question that will be worth the effort and the pain and the investment of traveling to another star system."

Tarter and other experts agreed that any interstellar mission should try to visit a star that has planets — hopefully planets the right size and distance from their stars to host life.

The symposium is part of the 100 Year Starship Study, a $1 million, one-year project of DARPA and NASA to look into what it would take to launch a mission to another star within a century. In November, the agencies plan to award $500,000 in seed money to an organization that can spearhead the effort to research the necessary technology and logistics.

Having planets isn't the only qualification the chosen star must meet. Another important criterion is its distance from Earth — the closer, the better.

At 4.4 light-years away from the sun, Alpha Centauri is our nearest stellar neighbor, putting it at the top of the list of candidates. However, even Alpha Centauri would be a long trip. One light-year, the distance light crosses in a single year, is about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion kilometers).

Quotemy comment:
so Alpha Centauri is the first target, home of the na'vi. Hope they find Pandora :) :D :D :D

ozone layer discovered on Venus:

A European spacecraft has discovered an ozone layer high in the sweltering atmosphere of Venus, a new study reveals.

The discovery will help astronomers better understand the composition of Venus' murky atmosphere, and by comparing it to the atmospheres of Earth and Mars, the findings could even help shape the search for life on other planets, the researchers said.

The European Space Agency's Venus Express spacecraft detected ozone, which is a molecule containing three oxygen atoms, while gazing at stars that can be seen at the very edge of the planet through its atmosphere.

"This detection gives us an important constraint on understanding the chemistry of Venus's atmosphere," study leader Franck Montmessin, of the Laboratoire Atmosphères, Milieux, Observations Spatiales (LATMOS) in France, said in a statement.

Debris of the comet Elenin passing Earth on sunda(or Elenin is called a "doomsday" comet)

22 million km will the comet be the closest approach of Earth and is likely to be a stream of debris rather than a completely intact comet.

the rests of Elenin will not return about 12,000 years

so watch the sky on Sunday

more news is here:
http://www.space.com/13281-doomsday-comet-elenin-earth-flyby-sunday.html

EDIT

most of Elenin is destroyed. It got destroyed by a powerful Coronal Mass Ejection or CME

somebody believe this comet is connected with the 2012 phenomenom, but relax no doomsday will happen, not on sunday or 2012.
this comet will pass far away from Earth, and the comet is so small, even when it was in it's real size, before most of it, got destroyed by a solar flare

Possible planets around the sun-like star SAO 206462 with dust-ring

A new image of the disk of gas and dust around a sun-like star is the first to show spiral-arm-like structures. These features may provide clues to the presence of embedded but as-yet-unseen planets.

"Detailed computer simulations have shown us that the gravitational pull of a planet inside a circumstellar disk can perturb gas and dust, creating spiral arms. Now, for the first time, we're seeing these dynamical features," said Carol Grady, an astronomer with Eureka Scientific, Inc., who is based at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. She revealed the image today at the Signposts of Planets meeting hosted this week at the center.

NASA's Spitzer Detects Comet Storm In Nearby Solar System

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has detected signs of icy bodies raining down in an alien solar system. The downpour resembles our own solar system several billion years ago during a period known as the "Late Heavy Bombardment," which may have brought water and other life-forming ingredients to Earth.

During this epoch, comets and other frosty objects that were flung from the outer solar system pummeled the inner planets. The barrage scarred our moon and produced large amounts of dust.

ow Spitzer has spotted a band of dust around a nearby bright star in the northern sky called Eta Corvi that strongly matches the contents of an obliterated giant comet. This dust is located close enough to Eta Corvi that Earth-like worlds could exist, suggesting a collision took place between a planet and one or more comets. The Eta Corvi system is approximately one billion years old, which researchers think is about the right age for such a hailstorm.

Here is some scary news, but this happened before

Earth was nearly hit by 3275 pieces of a comet that broke apart in 1883. Each piece was between 50 and 800 meter in diameter. If some of them crashed into Earth, all life would be devastated.

the comet was in a distance from Earth at between 600-8000 km. This frightened the scientists

http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2011/10/20/3343484.htm

That was good, that it didn't hit Earth, or nobody of us have been here
