Stephen Hawking, one of the most influential physicists of the twentieth century and perhaps the most celebrated icon of contemporary science, has died at the age of 76.

The University of Cambridge confirmed that the physicist died in the early hours of 14 March at his home in Cambridge, England.

Certainly one of the worst days for science.

Stephen Hawking lived with ALS for over 50 years.
I lost my grandfather in 2013 due to complications from ALS.
One day, there will be a cure.

My favorite quote from him is:

"Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet."
~Stephen Hawking

Hawking was perhaps the greatest thinker of our time. He will be missed.

I should really organize a memorial star party in his honor...

Haven't been able to do it much lately, that's why. Used to be able to sometimes back around 2015-16, but I can't seem to do it anymore...PM me if you like.

On-topic:
Mr. Hawking was born a nobody, and died a legend.
Made major scientific contributions to the world of astrophysics while also struggling with ALS for 55 years. Intel and Microsoft provided him with his special computer in 1997 and upgrade after upgrade, used it literally all the time up until the end. Pretty amazing, actually. Intel wrote a program that sensed Stephen's facial gestures, allowing him to not only choose words to speak, but also use Windows, browse the Web, e-mail, write his famous books and papers in MS Word, and use Skype. He even said that only being able to slowly choose words allowed him to put more thought into what he's saying/writing.

May he rest in peace, and go down in history as one of the greatest minds to ever live, up there with Einstein and Newton.

To survive ALS for 5 years is tough. To survive 50 years is nothing short of amazing.

My grandfather was diagnosed with ALS around 2010-2011. He passed on December 4, 2013.
I know what it's like to have a loved one go through ALS. It's hard. Trust me on this one.

Stephen Hawking was a legend and a symbol of hope for those going through ALS and their families.

I think his status helped him, but surviving and being supported for 50 years is an exploit.

When I was in East Africa in 1999, I was traveling with a woman who had ALS. This safari was her 'bucket list' trip, and she was making the most of it. Even though she got along OK, she had to spend a lot of time (with her husband's help) dealing with her health issues. They were 'rewarded' though, by seeing a leopard, and a very rare caracal, right in our camp on the southern edge of Serengeti National Park.

I person I knew of, but never met, was Charlie Ginsburg, leader of the six man team that invented the first videotape machine. He had type 1 diabetes, and may still be to this day the longest-surviving type 1 diabetes survivor.
