Since there is no Na'vi verb "to avoid", how would one say, for example, "I'm trying not to cry,"?

Agreed, possible. I'm thinking about the ‹äng› in the controlled verb. wm.annis doesn't say anything about affect in the grammar but it seems worth mentioning.

There is no effect in grammar with any of the second position infixes.  It has absolutely 0 effect on the meaning of what you are saying, it merely expresses how you see it.

The ,äng> here seems just a bit nebulous in its meaning. Are you trying to say 'I am trying not to cry, and I am upset about that', or I am trying not to cry(and I am upset about crying)'?
