The Quoteworthy Na'vi Thread
« on: January 28, 2010, 08:48:55 am »
Hey all, so here's an idea I just had:

Post quoteworthy (cool sayings/quotes) in Na'vi in this thread for all to read. Make sure to add a translation for the new learners, be it by spoiler or diff color text.

"Tìyawn Nìftxavang" - Credit to Fkeu Omaticaya Tzmukan

I'm no a native speaker but isn't love in "love passionately" a verb? In the quoteworthy line it's a noun... Then it would be tìyawn aftxavang - passionate love

No, we've determined that love can't be a used as a verb yet, but I do need to double-check that.

Yes, that's exactly my point... It can't. But if you translate "love passionately" where 'love' is a verb in the imperative (at least, that's how I understand it) tìyawn doesn't work with 'passionately' - does it make sense in English to have "(the) love passionately"?

EDIT: Typo

Ok, tslolam. So yes, you're right and I need to tell Fkeu Omaticaya Tzmukan that he's got it wrong.

Pretty close - and I'm not sure this is entirely right anyway...

Actually sounds more awkward in English. Lol.

peng - v. tell

I figure it's good for when someone is telling/saying something to someone else.

Ahh. Makes sense, though at this point it's just personal preference. It makes more sense to me to say "I spoke to him" or "She spoke that..." than using tell, but whatever.

I just find plltxe a bit funny for that - but maybe because I've only seen it used it used intransitively with no direct object referencing what is being spoken, e.g. I speak Na'vi only seems to have been written Oe plltxe leNa'vi (I speak Na'vily/in the way of the Na'vi-adv).

Not saying you can't, I have no idea really. :D

Edit: Grr... I mean niNa'vi obviously :) Getting dumb tonight... must be lack of coffee.

I like both of those. Any original sources (I thought I recognized the first one) or are they yours?
