"Can I help you?"
"I hope so, I heard a rumor, about a legend, about this dragon living in the forest around these parts?"
"Ah, I've only lived in Millhaven a couple years, you wanna talk to Pete, he's a ranger, lived round here since he was a kid. Hey Pete! This one's for you!"
A man in, perhaps, his late forties, his temples graying, and wrinkles begging to be noticeable, he looked like a serious kind of man. His Ranger uniform looked almost immaculately pristine.
"I'm Pete, how can I help you?"
Pete held out a hand, the stranger shook it.
"So, I heard this rumor, that there's legend, about a dragon living in the forest around here?"
"Well, I can confirm the rumor, there is indeed a legend about a dragon living out in these woods."
"Anyone ever see it?"
"Well, there's folks who claim to have seen it. But then there's folks who claim all sorts of things, from alien abduction to the Earth being flat, and plenty more besides."
"Ever seen it yourself?"
"Well, I've seen plenty of stuff I can't rightly explain, in those woods, and outside of them."
"Is there anything in common between the descriptions of the dragon?"
"Apart from alcohol, and sometimes other substances, quite often being consumed before they start seeing dragons?"
"Yeah."
"Yeah, actually, it's big, size varies, from as big as a truck, to bigger than a house, sometimes it's scaly, sometimes it's hairy, sometimes it has feathers, sometimes it's green, sometimes it isn't, oh, and sometimes it's invisible. Not really sure how you claim to have seen a dragon you couldn't see, but there you go."
"Anything else, is it dangerous, does it take livestock? Does anyone know what it eats?"
"Well, the way old man Meacham used to tell it, it was pretty darn fierce and dangerous. Some say it's a blood thirsty predator, then again, some say it's a herbivore."
"So, not so much continuity, then."
"Planning on going out in the woods looking for it yourself then?"
"That's why I'm here."
"Look, son, there is something out there more dangerous than bears, wolves and pumas. We get all sorts coming up here for the hunting, while most of those folks are responsible, and quite often experienced hunters, many with huge amounts of time spent out in the woods, they know exactly what they're about, exactly what they're doing. Most, not all. Nah, we get a few total jack asses, people who haven't a clue, quite often there's too many guns, too much testosterone, and way too much alcohol, and sometimes a selection of other recreational substances for good measure. As arranger, I get to keen up the mess they leave, it's not just beer bottles and sometimes syringes. Wounded animals, often maimed, in pain, sometimes dying. All of us rangers know it's only a matter of time before they mange to take out a hiker, another hunter, of one of us. There's been a few close calls, so far we've been lucky, but sooner or later luck runs out. It's getting late in the day, if you want my advice, at least leave it till morning, you'll see more in the daylight. And hopefully you'll be less likely to wind up getting shot at by some dumb shmuck city slicker who thinks buying an expensive gun makes 'em some kinda expert hunter."
"Do you know if it's nocturnal, diurnal?"
"I'm sorry, that, I couldn't tell you."
"Any especially hot spots for sightings?"
"There was a spot, way out deep in the woods, a couple of folks say they saw him around there. But that whole area was logged back in the eighties."
"Anywhere specific, more recently?"
"Not that anyone ever told me."
"So, how many square miles does that rule out?"
"I guess in total, a few hundred, but there's still a few thousand left to search, and it could be anyplace out there."
"Uh-huh. So I should find a good place to pitch, and bed down for the night."
"Good plan. In the mean time, is there anything we can tempt you with, from Millhaven's finest store?"
"We'll, now that you mention it, some of your local caught fish would be great. Oh, and any recommendations for a good place to park up?"
"Depends what your looking for in a pitch, do you want facilities, pool, shower, restaurant, power hook up?"
"Somewhere quite, off the beaten track."
"Hmm, yeah actually, there's a good spot I know. It's quiet, but not so far from the highway, the ground's flat and firm, well drained, good spot for fishing close by. Edge of a swath of trees planted, what, most seven or eight years back. There's no power, but the track there's good, and cell reception is OK."
"Sounds good, how do I get there?"
Pete took an old school map from a rack by the counter, and unfolded it.
"So, we're here ..... " he pointed to Millhaven on the map " ..... take this road out of town ..... " Pete traced out the route as he explained it " ..... along here, there's a big old rock here, side of the road, mile after that there's a track, opposite side of the road's a cell tower, so you can't miss it. If you get to the bridge, you've gone too far. You shouldn't, can't miss the cell tower. Mile down the track is a decent size area, was a logging camp, back when they logged it. Not likely be disturbed there."
"Well, thank you, I'll take the map."
The stranger paid cash.
"Thank you, and thank you Pete."


The stranger found the camp site was just as Pete had described it, the fishing was good. As dusk fell, and with fresh fish supper finished, they set off into the woods.


It was around ten, maybe half past. The full moon shone brightly in the cloudless sky. A Ford F150 pick up pulled up alongside the horse trailer, it was in darkness, Pete knocked on the door anyhow, and wasn't surprised by the lack of an answer. He grabbed his rifle from the truck, examined the ground around the trailer, before heading off towards the trees. It was over an hour before he found the stranger.
"Howdie, I just swung by to make sure you were OK."
"Well, thanks, as you can see, I'm fine."
Pete sighed deeply.
"Yeah, well, I'd like to keep it that way."
"Well, thank you, that's reassuring to know."
"Hour an half ago I got a call, party of seven or eight swung by the store, just 'bout cleaned the place out of booze."
"So ..... ?"
"Well, the description I got, was they're packing enough heat to wage at least a medium scale war."
"Well, thanks for the heads up, I'll stay alert."
"Look, son, us Rangers are the ones who have to clean up the mess these jackasses leave behind. Garbage, truck load of garbage all to often. Assuming they don't manage to start any wild fires, which they do more often than any of us'd like. There's the abandoned snares and traps, not to the mention the animals, wounded, maimed, in pain, suffering, and all too often, dying. Then there's been a few 'accidents' where they've injured themselves or each other, and I don't just mean one or two. Look, we all know we've been lucky, at least lately, we've not had any fatalities since February last year. But we're not kidding ourselves, that that luck's gonna run out sooner or later. I don't 'specially want that time to be tonight, and you know what? I kinda like you. Can't put my finger on it, you have ..... something about you, I don't particularly want you to be our ..... "
In the not so far away distance, there was a loud crash, and a loud heavy thud, a moment's silence before a series more thuds. Pete looked in the direction the sounds came from, looked back at the stranger. More thuds, another crash and a sound like the wing beats of an absolutely enormous bird.
"Wait here."
There was a good sized bank, with a steep scramble the last fifty or sixty feet to reach the top. Pete made it and stopped, looked down in wonder into the hollow below him.
"Should've guessed they'd hit it off better than we would." said the stranger, a few moments later.
Pete looked round at him, now leaning against a tree and watching the spectacle before them.
A huge green hairy creature, which could only be a dragon, was bouncing around as playfully as a puppy with a new friend, a black and scaly new friend. A black and scaly new friend, with a saddle and a prosthetic tail piece.
"I take it the green one is your dragon then?" the stranger asked, not looking away from the two playful dragons.
"Erm, yeah. His name's Elliot. The black one's yours?"
"Well, he's a friend, not a pet, but ..... yeah, Toothless is mine. Or maybe I'm his. Whatever."
"I never knew there were different types of dragon. And yeah, Elliot is friend not pet. Family really."
"Yeah, Toothless is pretty much family too. And there's quite a few different dragons, actually. But I've never seen one like Elliot."


Natalie heard the sound of engines before she saw the headlights, they stopped in the yard, and after a while there was a knock on the door.
"Coming!" She called out, wondering who would be visiting so late.
She opened the door.
"Err, Pete."
"Natalie, I'd like you to meet my new friend, his name's Hiccup, and you'll never guess, but  ..... "
At that, two dragons burst from the trees that surrounded Natalie's house, each pressed up against their human for a several seconds. Then, at no apparent signal, they looked up at each other, Toothless glanced very briefly at Natalie, before they bounced joyously back into the woods.
"No, let me guess, he has a dragon too?"
" ..... err, well yeah." Pete sounded a little deflated.
"Dragons, love them, but, they can really steal your thunder sometimes." Hiccup, with a knowing smile.
"So, you two gonna stand on the porch all night?"
"Ah. So, can Hiccup leave his trailer in the yard tonight?"
"Yeah, I reckon so. And I reckon you'll be wanting to borrow the spare room tonight?"
"Natalie, you always could read me."
"Nah, not always, it took a day or two before I got the hang of that."
They turned at the sound of growling, two dragons each pulling on large tree branch emerged back out onto the grass.
"Will he be OK, Elliot's a fair bit bigger, than, err ...... "
"Toothless."
" ...... than Toothless. Err, Toothless?"
"He can pull them back into his gums, most the time he looks like he doesn't have any, so, Toothless."
"Really?"
"Mmm."
"And you're not worried?"
"About Toothless? He can take care of himself, I've seen him fight and take down dragons way bigger than Elliot."
"Oh, err ..... So, you wanna come in, take the weight off your feet?"
"Foot, and yeah, why not."
"Oh, I'm sorry ..... "
Natalie, only now looking down ad seeing the prosthetic.
"Don't be, it's kinda part of the bond between me and Toothless."

"Yeah, it's kinda a really long story, a really, really long story."
