I don't own one.  I've used one and like it a lot.  However, I like watching anything destroyed, so... I don't know where I'm going with this...

It seems to me that the iPad is a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none, it is as portable as a netbook without the multi-tasking, it has apps like an iphone without the portability or ability to make calls (or a rubbish camera) and it has a largish screen like a laptop without any of the other useful things a laptop has. I'd rather have them all separately.

I'd only get it because I could watch Avatar on trips with a bigger screen than an iPod Classic and a longer battery life than a standard laptop.  Only reason, and I find it to be a good reason.

The only useful reason I'd think about is to load tons of books onto it. You don't have to carry all the paper with you...

Or you could get a kindle for less with a digital ink screen that doesn't hurt your eyes.

I'm struggling to see anything that it does better than an alternative.

True. But I still prefer reading printed books. Because, after 50 years, you can open a library.

Seconded, but if I had to use some form of ebook, it certainly wouldn't be an iPad.

At my library you can already rent Ebooks and I also hate the iPad, I saw a vid where you see a huge line before the store where it was soled, then a guy comes walking in, buyes an iPad, gets out the store infront of the huge line, took it out of the box and smashed the iPad on the ground and all the people were getting mad!

I'm changing my answer to yes because.... Everyone sees mine " oh is that the new iPad ?" drives me nuts I'm like doing adverts for Steve and not getting paid.
