Dogs are a big part in my life. I study the differences between prey drive, pack drive, dominance drive etc. in the domestic dog, the motivational triggers that release these drives and how one should deal with dominant dog drive issues. I also compare the wolf, coyote, and fox with the dog. I would just like to have those words for my own personal use but in Na'vi there is no words for dog, coyote, wolf or fox as there would be no such creature on Pandora. I think maybe loan word style it for myself? How would Neytiri say those words if you were to tell her about them? All I could come up with is keynayn, kayoti, wulf, faks. What do you think?   :-\

I know that people translate cat with palulukantsyìp ("little thanator")  and dog with nantangtsyìp ("little viperwolf").
First time I heard this was in the coversation betwee Prrton and Tirea Aean. The dogs of one of them were barking and they called them aynantangtsyìp.

I also use nantangtsyìp. I hear it is official. Or no?

Do the Na'vi have nantangtsyìp as pets?

Kamean

As I hear, no. :( But it is question to Cameron.

I figured that this question was probably asked sometime before, however, I don't have time to look through all the old threads to find it so it would be safe to do it here.  :D

Kamean

You may ask it here because many don't come to spam section.

we use nantangtsyìp fo "canine" and palulukantsyìp for "feline". it's usually obvious from context which sort of canine or feline it is. if not we can always use adjectives like hì'i and apxa.

This was a really hard one for me because I am so new to the language, but considering what I know about canines I have to say Oe mllte. All the years I have spent studying them nantang references just really don't feel right. Also it doesn't really give me the capability to make the comparisons to the wolf, coyote and fox. To me it will be keynayn, kayoti, wulf sì faks.
That being said does any body know about the nantang?  I would love to learn about them!  :)  Just from observations they seem to be a pack animal but is it like the wolf where the family is a combo of related and integrated members or like that of the coyote where the pack is made up of the parents and offspring of former year who stay behind and help care for the pups untill they strike out on thier own. Coyotes sometimes band together over a large carcass and work out agreements only for the duration of the shared meal. After wich they return to the territory they came from and this is not that common though when it does happen it is mostly in harsh times like the winter.

In the meantime I see nothing wrong with saying "nantangtsyìp 'Rrtayä alu kayoti".  That's a legal word form.  "Wulf" sadly isn't; I don't think you can end a syllable with "f".  You might have to modify that to "wulfì" or something.

The biggest mistake of all: tok is already a word ;)
