This type of optical illusion is quite familiar.  There are similar ones where you're staring at a picture for a while, colors inverted.  Then you glance at a blank surface and see the normal image.

Here what I observe is happening is the colors without detail are being "absorbed" into your retina, but when the B/W details are shown to you, the color "left over" from your eye naturally applies itself and it looks like a normal color picture.
