Connection problems

Since a few weeks (if not a month), I am experiencing problems to connect to the forum.
What happens: Every is going well. The pages load quickly. But sometimes, the pages don't load for 5-10 minutes.
The error code is ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT. This problem doesn't seem to come from my computer.

I am not the only one who has problems with the connection:

I might have found the reason of that connection problem: You click too quickly? You're banned for a few minutes.
That's probably an anti-spam measure. Nothing to do with a cheap connection.

This might very well be the case, that the cause of the connection issues is a DoS-filter behaving a bit too aggressively, and blocking IPs that request too much pages per minute (or something like that). I did a bit of research:

  • A period of downtime takes about 5 minutes, but sometimes it is more.
  • When there is no downtime, the forum loads quickly for me and without any problems. There are only problems when the forum is down, and then nothing loads at all.
  • During a downtime, when you use a site to verify this, it says that the forum is actually accessible. This indicates to me that some kind of IP blocking is going on.
  • Changing the DNS does not help (I switched from my ISP's DNS to OpenDNS, and the problem still occurs.) So it is not a DNS failure, probably.
  • During a downtime, every single page from forum.learnnavi.org does not load. learnnavi.org and, for example, the IRC server irc.learnnavi.org, are not affected.
  • Also forum.learnnavi.org doesn't respond to pinging during downtime.

It would be really great if this could be resolved. Whatever a DoS-filter may be thinking, I'm not trying to bring down the server by reading some pages ;)

[...] But really.  Something is going on with the forum performance recently. It refuses to load a lot. I have to use proxytunnel.co.uk to get it to load sometimes. I don't know what's going on.

Interesting. I'm often really quick and I didn't get connection problems or got banned by such DDoS-filters. I had connections problems also when I did almost nothing on the forum.
My last connection issue here was five days ago and (if I remember me correct) I saw in the /Who is online that only a few people / guests viewed the forum after the problem, so it was probably a global event.

Big Edit:

I just tryed to upload a file in the gallery and the connection got lost. BUT at the same time, I was online by my phone here and everything was accessible!

There actually is a firewall rule that shuts out aggressive recurrent connections from a single IP. I will try relaxing the parameters on it to see if that helps.

Problem solved. No downtime. Thanks!
Is it me or the parameters were too strict?

I've experienced no downtime at all today, while the previous week I had downtime multiple times a day. So I think we can call this problem solved! :D Irayo nìtxan nìtxan nìtxan, ma Markì! :D

No, it was not you. I was a bit paranoid and made the connection timers too restrictive.

Easing up some more...

EDIT: I now have it configured to allow at least 250 TCP connections every 5 seconds from a single IP. That is up from 100:5 from yesterday and 100:20 back when there were a lot of connection timeouts.

Interesting. Those numbers are rather higher than I would expect. I would think that 5:5 would be more than adequate, but there must be a lot more handshaking going on during a connection than I realize.

Like most folks, I have occasional connection problems. But they are infrequent and random.
