Na'vi and gigadictionary.org

I am wondering if anyone of you would be interested in adding Na'vi to gigadictionary.
Gigadictionary was designed to make creating dictionaries easy and quick.
By using the idea of translation groups it links a word to a set of translations from different languages.
In other words - by adding one Na'vi word to a group of translations you get a whole set of the word's translations to many languages.

This however is just a tip of an iceberg - gigadictionary provides you with much more functionalities like:
   * presenting declension and conjugation
   * finding infinitives by searching for any inflection of the word
   * defining antonyms, synonyms, comparison and other types of linked words
   * defining word definitions

I hope your servers can handle.....300 different combinations of inflections per verb. Don't be scared, it's 3 infix positions, and by that we can have a lot of combinations. Also 5 case markings for nouns and 10-20 adoptions (haven't counted), which can be tagged onto it.

Sounds like a good idea anyways.

Hello, sorry for the late response.

A large number of inflections per word is not a problem. Gigadictionary was in fact designed to handle highly inflected languages. For example currently the biggest paradigms appearing in the project are French verbs (44 inflections - most tables are however still empty), Polish verbs (41 inflections - e.g. kupować), Polish adjectives (36 inflections).

Gigadictionary is not only presenting the paradigms but also allows people to find infinitives by searching for any inflection of the word. This I believe would be especially beneficial for a language having such rich inflection.

To set up a new language in gigadictionary I need someone to give me the set of parts of speech used by Na'vi and the way inflection tables should look like.

Also any word connections which appear in the language may be configured. The default set of possible connections contain "antonyms", "synonyms", "idioms" (idiomatic expressions related to currently viewed word), "see also" and "comparison" (just for adjectives / adverbs and not for all languages) but this set may be customized to reach your needs. You might want to read more about word connections in gigadictionary.

Another thing which might help with the project are gigadictionary language tools which allow to:
1) auto complete inflection tables for regularly inflected words (I just need to know the pattern and the list of words)
2) find word connections by added prefixes or postfixes (an example might be finding antonyms by the negation prefix "un" and words "stable/unstable", "usual/unusual")
3) find word connections by changed ending (an example might be comparison relation for Polish adjectives where the pattern was "<stem>wy, <stem>wszy, naj<stem>wszy")

I believe that using gigadictionary would be really beneficial for your community.

  Thank you for your offer. I have a concern regarding expanding the documentation methodology for the Na'vi language.  In my opinion, Na'vi has not progressed to the point where it should be presented via multiple venues because of the diminished capability to reconcile errors or omissions. I feel that the growth and development is best served in the current format.

What's in it for you?

Gigadictionary is my hobby project. It is a very well designed database capable to store and describe languages of any structure.
Unfortunately building up the site was not as hard as getting people to use it and to contribute.

What I would get from you just by joining the project is:
1) Help with building up a community of users - those who just visit the site to obtain information and those who from time to time are likely to add some new information.
2) Getting user feedback about what's good and what needs to be improved over the site (I am actively working on site updates)
3) As I believe, apart for contributing words of Na'vi language people from your community would at least be likely to add words from other languages to what I call "translation groups" (please visit the site to find out more) - this would be a great benefit for all languages which are stored in gigadictionary (including Na'vi.)
