Ma Ertew, there is also a button at the top of the shoutbox that lets you detach the shoutbox, so it can be open even if you are somewhere else in the forums (or maybe with the forums themselves closed.)

Simply being able to turn the shoutbox on and off would be useful to some folks, and that probably isn't real hard to code.

That last example sound is a human voice, and if we wanted to use it (and I agree that it is rather strident), we could simply have someone record it. I know there are people in the community that can do a very good job with the various Na'vi crys.

This forum has currently 26 modification installed. 4 mods are written exclusively for LN and 7 mods I have modified in order to fix mistakes, security issues and particulary to integrate the mods better into the forum. 2 of the 26 installed mods are paid mods.

Let me explain shortly how I manage some mods that received an update by an example: The country flag mod allows you all to choose the country. So, the standard modification one can download from Simple Machines shows the country info as: "Country: [flag]". I have edited the php code of it to let it show as you see it: "[flag] Country name". The standard mod misses two images and I have added them (otherwise IE/Chrome users will see a missing image sign in the profile editor and on the registration page). And the Eywa'eveng flag, of course, is not included in this mod, so I have added it as a nice bonus, too.

One can see that I have to add and change all the stuff again if there is an important update. And there are 6 more modded mods like the country flag mod. The mods have to be tested in various local SMF installations before they are going to be installed on the production site, just to make sure that they are stable and working .

So, the shoutbox is one of the paid mods. I am trying hard to not touch the code of such mods to prevent difficulties if there occur a problem with this mod that requires support by the mod author. However, the only thing I have added to the shoutbox mod is just an html id element to be able to add a white background color and that change/edit is noted internally.

Now the thing with the audio on/off check box in the profile, this kind of edit is not as easy as one may think. One would have to adjust some javascript functions, add a proper php code for handling the actions that currently a js function is doing. Also, a check box in the member profile editor requires an additional column in the member table or a completely new table in the database. I am personally very careful regarding adding new stuff "by manual edits", because it could increase the db's complexity and I want (my opinion, of course) to keep the db as happy and clean as possible.

However, I am not against adding new things, but I just want to let you all know that certain stuff can not be done as easy as one wish and it requires a lot of work and time. Btw, from April on, I'll have about 3 hours of free time per day.
