if sunu was a transitive verb, both would be equally correct. but, it is not! sunu is an intransitive verb that can be thought of as meaning "is liked". the subject "is liked" to the indirect object.

sunu oer(u) coffee

I've seen coffee transliterated as both kofi and kafi, afaik there isn't a canon correct form.

...and to break it down a bit, as a beginner to another beginner...

sunu means something like "to please". If you know french it is closer to "plaisir". The two words (Engish and French) are cognates but in French it's used to say "I like, I love" so it is closer to the french sense.

So sunu coffee means = the coffee is pleasant (French: cafe plait)

And to show who loves coffee, that is, to whom coffee is pleasant you need to use the dative "to" form.

sunu coffee oer = the coffee is pleasant to me aka i love coffee (Fr. cafe me plait)
sunu coffee Kyttinur = the coffee is pleasant to Kyttin aka Kyttin loves coffee

I got kafi from dict-navi, not contradictory, just sharing info.

Do "-il, -l" and "-it, -t, or -ti" come into play at all here?
Kafil?

No because -il and -it come into play when the verb is transitive. Transitive means there is a transition in action. Eg. coffee does this, coffee does that, coffee wakes me up, coffee hurts my stomach etc.

Sunu is an intransitive verb. Coffee just "is pleasant", there is no transition of action here.
