Edit: Listened 2.5 times to this... nicely adresses most common story complaints. I hope next time he will follow on his insight of 110 pages max, so they won't have to do that severe cut, and then can add those small (5sec screen time max, or even fitting into background of existing scenes) features that really enrich/deepen (like the engineer stopping the clock when Titanic is about to sink).

that, sir, is GREAT.

I think everyone everywhere needs to go to every single forum out there where people are hating on avatar and post this:

Quote
well. Someone showed this to me... and considering the sheer numbers of avatar haters on ths forum... You all need to listen to this while you are forum surfing...

QuoteAre you one of those people who thought that Avatar's script was weak? Did you find it predictable, hokey, emotionally manipulative and (ironically) two-dimensional? ... if you truly hated Avatar's script, then you should at least have the courage to hear the man out: http://media.wgaw.org/audio/Cameron_Feeney.mp3

heres the article:

Edit: posted on one forum... plan to post on others... really... This ^^^ needs to go EVERYWHERE, every... EVERYone that read that " pocahantas avatar" also needs to listen to this.

did I mention that people NEED to hear this? cause they really do.  YOU! go forth! and spread the word!

another edit: hell... post on other forums WHILE your listening to it... so its like... you hear it... and you share it with 100 people... kill 2 Ikran with one stone tskxe.

Edit: (because triple posting... whichi could have easily done, is kinda frowned on)  Another Forum down.... only a few million to go... and ima not even done listening to it yet!

what he says at 50:00 is really cool.

... holy *$#&nuggets... in that last scene... Zoe saldana ACTUALLY DID SHED A TEAR... that is some kick ass acting... and shows just how important the actorers were in this movie. amazing. I feel like crying.

WHUT! I love the way he talk about lucid dream in that ;D

Overall is very nice. Good interview but I kinda feel sad that he said that Na'vi wasn't an actual language because of it's limited vocabulary. Does he even know about us and what we can do with it?

That thing is just amazing. When you get the chance to work with great actors like that, you're in film-making heaven. I think it's really hard not to have a tear while talking about it... right now, I don't know if I want to see the movie again, or read the script an second time. Some of the cut scenes are very powerful and hard to live without.

At 1:03:20, Cameron says:
Quote...you know, it's not truly a language in the sense that you could get a Na'vi dictionary, because we only have a thousand words...

Prove him wrong, Taronyu! I think he would probably appreciate a copy, especially seeing as the whole 20 questions thing with Karyu Pawl is coming up very soon.  ;D

Otherwise, there's a lot of information there. Definitely worth listening to if you want to know more about JC's writing process, as well as some interesting tidbits about the movie.

Okay, so the old podcast is here: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/radioavatar It was goofy fun that ended too soon, but we had creative people. I hope we can get a new gang together (interested? PM me, let's make some magic!)

I think that one of the most important things JC points out here is the distinct difference in science fiction films pre- and post-Star Wars. Much of the genre before the late 1970's was in the form of cautionary tales, usually taking one of these forms:

-- The dangers of nuclear experimentation (Godzilla is a good example of this)

-- The risks associated with intrusive technology (Think Orwell or Huxley)

-- The overarching fear of mutually assured destruction, present during most of the Cold War (Dr. Strangelove)

-- The inability of people to deal with the unknown (Any movie about Martians attacking the Earth)

-- The inability of people to control their own technology (Westworld, with Yul Brynner)

After Star Wars revolutionized the genre by incorporating the Hero's Journey as the main story archetype, many films and books after it followed suit, and the cautionary tales of the Postwar period began to fade away. Cameron must have noticed this right away, and immediately set out to try and meld the two, as seen in the Terminator films as well as Avatar. I don't want to continue putting words in his mouth, so I invite you to watch the interview and pay close attention to how he mentions this subject. (I believe the segment is about halfway through the interview.)

Anyway, what do you all think? Since we're on this forum, we all must like Avatar. You must have noticed this; it's what is being called an "environmentalist agenda" by the aysawtute. I don't think they remember just how much of a statement science fiction films used to make before they absorbed the Hero's Journey.
