Probably a little of both. Probably would be taller than a normal alien and would have the carbon fiber bones. That thing would give a predalien a run for it's money for sure. Plus it could not only kill things but bond with things as well (not sure what it would do though).

On Pandora I'd bet on her but if this thing and her were trapped in a building or something it's all over.

The Alien universe seems darker to me, while the Avatar universe seems brighter. That's why I think they're different.

Darker as in, more bad stuff?
Could be same universe but at different parts. Was there any kind of question like that to Cameron?

That, and just the general feel/vibe of the ship. :P Hard to explain.

Well, if you think about it, the robotic lifter that Ripley(Sigourney Weaver) uses to kill the queen in the first movie is VERY similar to the AMP suits the Marines use on Pandora.

Also those machines in Zion (It's from the Matrix trilogy) got some resemblence with the AMP.

I didn't think about the Zion machines, but now tht you mention it, they are a little similar.

Yes, and also if anyone here is familiar with SC (StarCraft , a game of Blizzard) the Goliath is also quite similiar to AMP.

Powered exoskeletons are a sci-fi staple and their presence alone doesn't make one film similar to another. As far as the "feel" of the films, for myself I find them very similar when we look at the human side of things. Avatar overall does have a "brighter, happier" feel to it, but I attribute that mostly to the outside world of Pandora. If you look at the interior sets, and the human tech, it is decidedly darker. The looming refineries of Hell's Gate, the claustrophobic corridors and cramped living conditions. While Grace's lab is bright and clean, the remote site is grimy, tight, and dimly lit, very much resembling the spaces in Aliens. This of course presents a clear contrast between humanity (which here is not necessarily human) and technology, as well as technology and nature.

The Powerloader used by Ripley, by the way, makes its appearance in the second film in the series (Aliens, directed by Cameron), not the first (Alien, by Ridley Scott).

Good points, I do think that everyone used the resemblence between Avatar and Cameron's Aliens version.
And still we need something more clear from Cameron himself so we can finally know if that scenario is right.

Seems to me though that Cameron went with a If it ain't broke don't fix it mentality regarding Avatar's similarities to Alien's machinery/

The Avatar cryo vessel was a lot whiter than the ships in Alien.

Not to forget that the Alien universe wasn't James Cameron's creation. He was merely the director and one of several writers for a single part of the franchise. So I doubt he would put his own original world and story into somebody else's universe with all the legal implications.
The technology (hibernation chambers, AMP suits, ...) used in both franchises isn't too original but rather quiet common in Sci-Fi.
Also Alien had faster than light space travel as a common and not very new technology - something that doesn't exist in the universe of Avatar.
