TorukMakto!

Hope Avatar will win a banch of awards , including movie of year.
It's very very hard for me to imagine a better movie. I've already said to my friends that I'll go to the movies now for Avatar and I'll have to wait quite some time in order to get my expectations lowered, then I could go to the movies again because it's truly hard for me to imagine something matching Avatar,at least on my personal scale.

Swok Txon

Yeah same here

i just hope some random movie doesn't start showing that totally blows my mind more than avatar

small change but it could happen  :-\

Yeah true beans

it most DEFINITELY must win the special effects

i mean, if it doesn't there will be an uproar and hell will freeze over!

No way in Pandora Avatar wouldn't win the special effects award!

But we're not on Pandora. :(

Avatar definitely raised the bar. :)

It did really raise the bar at multiple levels... and people realize that, and try to copy some of it.
It's funny to see all these news about new movies being converted to 3d now... being 2d originally there is so much you can do to recreate depth... still remember how crappy Harry Porter looked on imax screen when they "digitally stretched" it. You could easily see those post-process image artifacts.
Where is my NDD fix?

Even if Avatar wins NO Oscars, it will be the most important movie at The Oscars(tm) this year, and thus deserves ALL of the Oscars (every one--even ones for most depressing documentary, and kid's animation, and lifetime achievement)

And here's why:

I just read an interesting news update (Google news). The Oscars(tm) used to be "the thing" in America. Bigger than the World Series, bigger than the Superbowl. EVERYONE would watch them and then go gossip all day at work the day after. Then 2004 hit. People got tired of the same old depressing movies being at the top. less and less people tuned in to see the Oscars. Viewership went from the hundreds of millions to 40 million in 2003 to 30something million in 2008. It "crashed," hard. No one was tuning in any more. It was a joke.

But predictions for the Oscars for THIS year are over 55 million--thanks to who? What?

Flea-bitten blue monkeys! Take THAT Selfridge! The Na'vi are saving Hollywood's most illustrious self-love fest. When you think of all of the crap that Avatar got from the nerd hierarchy, frat boys, and other bitter non-believers; this is a stunning upset (um . . . kinda like when Avatar kicked Batman's butt and then Titanic's). The "Hollywood opinion" is that Avatar fans (that would be us) who would normally blow off the Oscars will tune in to see JC re-claim his title as "king of the world!" (his famous Titanic acceptance quote), and of course any blue costumes.

"Ayoeng are saving the Oscars!" but will they remember us next year? They won't remember us next week. But who cares? We are gonna save their butts! (*they hope)

Okay, so the old podcast is here: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/radioavatar It was goofy fun that ended too soon, but we had creative people. I hope we can get a new gang together (interested? PM me, let's make some magic!)

And yet, the Oscars are nowadays dominated by political interests - thus the Hurt Locker will most likely win. It's that I do not hope, and wish for Avatar to take that prize, but the Oscars have recently been only giving praise to movies which depict the very same things we see on the news everyday (and I've stopped watching those quite a while ago because of how only the negative stories are worth telling).

The real award Avatar needs is new viewers. The more people go and see it, the bigger the chance they'll keep something from the experience. I know that every single person whom has seen it because of me (aka friends, family, etc) have started thinking more about society, saving our ecologic environment and so on and so forth.

What other award Avatar can win after beating every possible record!
A stupid Oscar would be an insult, thus lowering it to the level of Crash, The Departed, No Country for Old Men. All of them being very good movies, bit far from Avatar.
Its like awarding a world champion for being the best at the high school competition!

no Oscar for Writing (orginal) ?

Remember Avatar is considered highly unoriginal by most critics. My calm and respectful response to that is: how is The Hurt Locker considered original?

I smell hypocrisy...

Sorry for the double post but here is why the Oscars mean less and less. In the words of the master himself:

"James Cameron is convinced his sci-fi epic Avatar will lose out at the upcoming Academy Awards, but hopes his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow takes home the Best Picture Oscar instead.

Cameron's blockbuster will go up against Bigelow's gritty war drama The Hurt Locker for the coveted prize at the upcoming ceremony in March, along with eight other films including Up In The Air, The Blind Side and Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire.

The moviemaker will also compete with his former spouse for the Best Director Oscar, but he's convinced Academy bosses will overlook Avatar because of his previous behaviour at the famous event.

Cameron is adamant Oscar bosses weren't impressed with his speech when he picked up the Best Director trophy for Titanic in 1998, in which he quoted one of the film's famous lines, telling the crowd, "I'm king of the world!"

He tells Empire magazine, "I always believe it's very unlikely that lightening will strike twice. I believe it's very unlikely that we will win because I made such a jacka** out of myself last time. Although there might be some curiosity about what I might do."

But Cameron hopes Bigelow's movie goes on to rule the ceremony instead.

He adds, "The Hurt Locker is a very, very strong picture. Of the contenders, it's definitely the strongest. Certainly it's Kathryn's moment. I would happily lose to her. I've already got one of those damn statues. I'd be p**sed off if somebody else won, but I wouldn't mind if she won.""

Jokes and pleasantries aside - if Cameron believes his movie won't get the best picture just because of how he behaved last time.... Well I suppose we need no more proof of how degraded the Oscars have become (sure I might be exaggerating and reading too much into JC's words but hey, in every joke there is a grain of truth).

He should win it and say Neytiri's quote "you are like babies, making noise, don't know what to do".

Considering how Avatar points out the flaws of humanity I think he should definitely go with Quaritch's line
"How's it feel to betray your own race?".
