I completely agree Coyote.

(tongue in cheek comments) I think an even better way to get Avatar the best picture Oscar would be to have one of the main characters mentally handicapped by the war. I.e instead of jake being a paraplegic, he has a horrible TBI which makes it hard to move or communicate and once he gets transferred into the Avatar's undamaged brain he is miraculously cured.

Then we can add mental disability and those films are gold for oscars.

(/tongue in cheek comments)

Edit: promoted to tute :)

While yes, that's gold, it conflicts with the fact that James wanted an EXTREMELY scientifically-relevant movie, meaning he wanted as many things to be true as possible.  Being a paraplegic works because he knew how to use his legs before, and even though he lost the skill, he still had the knowledge of how to do so within his brain.  But a speech impediment, or something along those lines, is "data lost" from the brain, which was the primary linking to the Avatar, so it would carry across.

It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.

Besides, we could all argue that Jake had a speech impediment anyway, with his "Brooklyn" accent being unusually... not Brooklyn.  :P

I'm with you on that, I was just making a joke about the fact that a mentally handicapped main character = Oscar.

I agree that it would ruin the movie ;)

Nah, the best way for Avatar to win an Oscar would have been to have Jake Sully be the child of a Arab Muslim Palestinian paraplegic father and a blind Israeli Jewish mother. He goes to Pandora and falls in love not with Neytiri, but with Tsu'Tey. They have to foil Col. Quaritch's evil plot to stop their love when Quaritch tries to force Jake to become a Minister.

Jake finds God but his troubled feelings call him back to the loving arms of Tsu'Tey. They marry and adopt a handicapped and mentally challenged young Na'vi girl, who loves her "two daddies". Neytiri makes a wedding speech where she denounces human imperialism, which, in a line from the movie, "has been a rampant festering boil since your history's second Bush administration". Colonel Quaritch realizes the error of his ways and devotes his life to being a Buddhist monk; Parker Selfridge drinks himself to death in despair.

If they were all humans, and the whole sci-fi idea was thrown out, then yes, probably.  However, I think movies like this would not be good at all, even though it has highly relevant topics.

Plus, if James Cameron did that, we'd all hate him, and he would no longer be the king of the world.

He would however have a shiny new Oscar to cuddle with ;D

I actually remember in an interview that he said he could really care less about getting Oscars from this, especially since he already has one.  I mean, this was his dream movie: just getting to make it was probably enough for him, plus thanks to people like ourselves, he gets to finish the full story with a trilogy.

Everybody says that. I guarantee you inside, he does want one.

^Yeah, though I must say that he has 2.5 billion reasons to say the academy was playing sour grapes if they snub him ;D

I did some research on this, because I typically bet on the Oscars (makes it more fun for me).

I currently think Avatar will win three Oscars: Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction and Best Sound Editing.   I hope it wins more but those are my 'official' predictions :)

I think 2.5 was the official "adjusted gross" to once and for all "sink the boat." Once Avatar pases (passed? I need to check the numbers) 2.5 billion in global box office (not DVD, video game, merch, etc.) JC will have truly outdone himself. Nothing will ever beat Gone with the Wind (well, not until we colonize mars, Io, and Pandora--and have more people to spend money on movies), but the world was a different place back then. All I care about is that Avatar kicks Titanic's b**** little ass. All the way down the block.

"glug glug glug Leo! (Di Caprio) There's a new sheriff in town. And his name is Toruk Makto!"

But "A fist full of Oscars" would be a nice headline post-ceremony.

Mine too, much as I'd like it to sweep the board.

I hope the academy brings in a motion capture performance award in time for Avatar 2.
Zoe Saldana's performance is worthy of an oscar.

Truthfully, I just want this to happen:

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

If Neytiri was unable to attend, she could have her acceptance pre-recorded and played at the ceremony, (I'm sure this has been done in the past) shouldn't be too hard to organize. ;D
Pasha, an Avatar story, my most recent fanfic, Avatar related, now complete.

The Dragon Affair my last fanfic, non Avatar related.

MaTe

ok... pre-recorded acceptance speech from Neytiri would be more hilarious than anything JC can possibly say if Avatar wins Best Picture.
