When Jake first links with his avatar, we see the "rainbow tunnel," as I like to put it. This led me to believe (at first) that it was created by the link system.
But...
We also see this "tunnel" as Grace joins with Eywa. So my question is... what in the world is this tunnel? Is it the tsaheylu in the avatar body (or possibly in Grace's case, the synthetic tsaheylu in her neck)? Could it possibly be representative of brain activity? Any ideas?

I think that the rainbow tunnel (love the name  ;D) shows when you enter the avatar body, doesn't metter where you are and are you in the link or not... just my opinion  ;)

The actual transfer into the linked Avatar is pretty much instantaneous. The rainbow tunnel you refer to is just a graphical representation of the transfer into the avatar mind. In reality, you would close your eyes, and the next instant you would open them, as your avatar.
See that shadow? It's the last one you're gonna see.

That makes perfect sense, but then why did it happen to Grace? It seemed like she was almost completely transferred to her avatar (we were following the rainbow tunnel) but then the link was broken (we see a bright white light). Could that have just been her being "uploaded" into Eywa, do you think?

Somehow I think it's just a movie device to signify the transfer. It's not actually tied down as something that actually happens.

It looks like an artist's interpretation of an electrical impulse traveling down a conduit of some kind (like the axon in a neuron, for instance).  So, as others have mentioned, it's probably just meant as a cinematic device to convey the idea of transfer in some fashion.

Alright, I see. That would explain it's use in each scene. Irayo, ma smuktu!  :D

I think maybe Grace became an entire Avatar (left her human body), but not survive, so she died as a Na'vi ...
Maybe like you said, the brain activities ...

ya... its like (actually... JUST like) the stargate... those 2-3 seconds of graphics are just representations, it is not actually expearianced by the traveler, from whose perspective, the travel is instant.  (even if they dont immediatly emerge... (episode 72 hours, and atlantis episode 32 min))

the proper name for this "tunnel" is The Amazing Technicolor Waterslide

This is probably what it's for, but I like to think that everything was done for a reason!

Maybe it's just meant to represent a bond, not tsaheylu, but connection in some way or another. Possibly to represent 'entering the realm of Eywa' or so...

Yea, I'd go along with that. It's a 2-3 second representation of something that actually happens instantaneously.
