Kaltxi!

I have to weigh in on this thread because I am a big fan of new technology and look forward to the DVD release of Avatar with everyone else. :)

About 3D TV's

This is a brand new technology for consumers and as such will be expensive when they are released later this year. Search "3D Television" on Google and you will find plenty of information. A few companies (Sony and Samsung come to mind) have already announced that they will released products this year.

About Blu-ray

This is a format for compressing and storing data (movies and other fancy extras) on a DVD-like medium. This has little to do with the 3D technology itself, it's just a way to store data. Ideally a regular Blu-ray player should be able to play 3D movies just fine but you WILL need a 3D television to display it. We're talking about a completely different format for video output and a regular TV (even an HD one) won't be able to show it.

Also, it will undoubtedly require a Blu-ray to view a 3D movie. There is much more data being stored for a 3D movie than for a regular movie (even an HD one) and so a DVD will very likely not be able to contain all of it. Plus with so much extra content (behind the scenes, making of, art, commentary, etc.) it would likely be much more than a DVD can handle.

About the glasses

By most reports you WILL need glasses to view the 3D movie when watching it on a 3D television. This is because of how the current 3D technology works. It gets displayed in a certain way that allows the glasses to makes the images appear to "leap out" of the screen. Read more about the 3D television technology and it should make sense.

About the Avatar release date

To me April is a completely reasonable date to have a DVD release. Movies come much quicker to DVD these days then they have ever before, especially big money makers. I would personally hope that Fox let's the movie houses make more money on it but I'm sure they can see the gigantic potential Avatar has for making even more money from Merch sales. Even though I really want the DVD to see the extra parts of the movie I can hold out to make sure the many movie houses make their money so I can keep seeing watching movies there.

Me too; I don't even have a PS3 or Blu-ray player, and I don't really need the 3D version (yes I saw it in the theater btw) since it will cost me way too much to get a Blu-ray player, 3D TV, and all that, especially considering I'll only be using it to watch Avatar.

Kaltxi!

I don't have a Blu-ray player yet either (will likely purchase a PS3 to get the best of both) but I will be getting one for Avatar. I know it's a lot of money for everything (3D TV, player, super-mega-ultra deluxe edition of the Avatar Blu-ray) and a pipe-dream for me but wouldn't seeing Avatar in all of its 3D glory be worth it? I like to think so.

Eywa ngahu,

I'd really like to watch Avatar at home on a 3D , unfortunately I don't have that amount of money, maybe after I graduatee, go to science field.

apparently the word on the street is that the 2d dvd/bluray won't be coming until June, with the 3d bluray coming around Christmas...  oh well, at least it gives me time to save up for the 3d tv :)

sorry no source to quote, but I'll try and find one.

Kaltxì ma frapo,

I think it would be a nice touch if their initial release of the DVD was on 8/24...Jake Sully's birthday, which would work well with an expected summer debut.  :)

April sounds great! That would mean 2 months until the US release, and maye an extra month for it to reach me! Wich is great, 'cause I havn't counted on getting this until summer.

Talaan

Hmmm amazon says 31.12 for the blu ray...Dont know wether its the real release date

Technowraith

The release date at this time is unknown. Rumors are flying about as early as April. Some editions may not be out until December. No one really knows. I'd say wait until an official announcement comes out.

I found this:

James Cameron on the Avatar Blu-ray DVD
Transcribed by AMZ | Source: ecranlarge.com

December 16, 2009 - James Cameron: Well the Blu-ray, because the disk has a lot of storage density, Blu-ray is the basis for 3D in the home . . . in the future. So they will have stereo Blu-ray players that can play stereoscopic 3D to a compatible screen. So probably the initial Blu-ray release of Avatar won't be in 3D and then a subsequent release will be in 3D. That's my guess right now. So we will probably put out a disk, you know, in six or eight months, let's call it six months, and then after that we will have a 3D disk when there are enough sets available.

I think in the first DVD release, we will put in a number of the scenes that we deleted from the film and I think there is some interesting material. We tried to get the film down to a good length, a good comfortable length to watch in 3D. There's two hours forty minutes, nobody's ever made a 3D film that long, so there is little bit of gamble that it would work, I didn't want people to get uncomfortable. But there's other material that we shot, that we edited and even some that we finished in CG, so we will put that into the disk

I hope that the industry isn't stupid and develops TV technology to allow us to use passive polarized glasses like the theatres.

I really hate those retarded active glasses that just flicker on and off, they give me a headache. I would honestly rather view it in the cyan/red filter format. ;D

Trust me, you don't want to. Doing that too excessively with permanently tint your eyes with the cyan/red filter. It already has happened to me... >.>
I know, I was being a skxawng at the time.

Technowraith

Viewing old-school 3D movies with the red and green glasses damages your eyes. The new 3D format that's out today uses polarizing filters that contain a slight red or green hue. But nothing like the old school dark green and red glasses. Haven't heard much on the negativity of the 3D format using the polarizing filters, i can't imagine it's ideal for extended, constant use.

It has to be better than using the active LCD glasses... and you don't have to charge them.

BTW... I was joking about the cyan/red glasses, in case you guys breezed over that. :P

All LCD already work with polarized light - they just need to find a way of doubeling the frequency so they have 48 fps instead of 24 fps - so there are 24 fps for each polarization/eye. And a way to switch between left and right circular polarization fast. But those are minor technical details ...

So the wait won't be too long - that's good news.

The rest rather not as I really would like to see the extended cut with all the cut scenes put back in.

Irayo.
I liked his opinion about the whole EE version thing. It's quite interesting to have an option to watch the EE and the theatrical one on the same purchase, as long as you got a package that supports that.

Interestingly DVD and Blu-ray are already listed for pre-order at Amazon.de and Amazon.fr

Are those pre-orders only available for Germany and France?
