Is China
pulling Avatar from theaters because it's too popular? Moviegoers in the Asian nation who haven't already seen James Cameron's Golden Globe-winning sci-fi epic will find it more difficult to see the film, according to The Los Angeles Times.

The box office smash is already the highest-grossing movie of all time in the communist nation, earning $76 million, but the government has decided to remove Avatar from 1,628 2D screens this week. China's state-run movie distributor China Film Group is replacing the box office hit with a biography about Confucius starring Chow-Yun Fat, according to The Times.

Chinese fans will still be able to view Avatar on almost 900 3D screens.

Meanwhile, a 42-year-old Taiwanese man with a history of high blood pressure died while watching the blockbuster in a Chinese theater last week. Doctors believe his fatally stroke was likely triggered by "over-excitement" from seeing the movie.

Um, wow!...I guess that's all I really have to say, wow.

It makes sense. Forced relocations without compensation... Tibet...

I wouldn't show it to the peasants in countryside where the 2d screens are likely to be either if I did things like that, the city people fine but not the rural areas. There are too many parallels.

Dam, new this would happen

Their censorship is a real problem for their public but its a significant factor of why they are soon to become the worlds next superpower

they have so much power and don't want the slightest risk or chance of losing it

can't blame em

Txonyä'ite

And Cameron Can't even sue. For example even if he had a contract with the chinese theaters that it is being pulled from the courts in China do not recognize US rulings nor will they rule against their own people if you take the case to them, even if the chinese national is clearly in the wrong. Very BS system IMHO

pbhead

well.. its staying in the 3d theaters... so... it only has 25% of the screens or so it had before... but... that just means that the money made per screen will go up...

gonna be alot of sold out shows over there for a while.

i still have to pre-order my tickets to see it in 3D, and i dont show up at least an hour before the previous showing lets out, i get to stand in the back or sit in the front row. its probuble even worse over there now. some people may not get to see it on the big screen

Oh China...Can you go a week without doing something the makes the rest of the world worry for your sanity?

I'm wondering how long they can manage to supress their people like that? If any other country then China would've tried this, they would've got riots on their hands.

I hope "the market" prevails and the extend it...
Where is my NDD fix?
some people juggle geese...

A few reasons why they can do this are as follows

1. They are an incredibly successful country (no denying that)

2. They are masters of censorship LOL

3. They have the worlds largest military (11 million in the army alone...maybe it was 1.1)

So

sad but true :-(

Wow.... Just, wow. o_o

If I was to die in some way, that'd be the way to go!
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.       - John Stuart Mill

Won't make a huge difference for the bigger cities...

Next time you go to see Avatar, sneak a peek into one of the theaters showing it in 2d, you'll notice tons of empty seats compared to the 3d showing you end up going to.

For the smaller areas with only 2d theaters it will make a difference.
