Well so far I've always seen it on a screen that I know can also be used for 2D, so I guess it's not that "real3D" you're talking about. It was one of those where the 3D-glasses switch between shutting the left and the right eye.

Every 3D screen can also be used for 2D. They always have at least a second projector for the previews, commercials ...

And the line-up for upcoming IMAX movies is long:
March 05 - Alice in Wonderland
March 19 - Hubble
March 26 - Dragon
May 21 - Shrek
June 18 - Toy Story
June 30 - Twilight Saga
July 16 - Inception
December 17 - Tron
...
There may be gaps - who knows
We can be thankful that Avatar could run this long ...

seems like it may return in aug-sep-oct timeframe...

Not sure why there is such a wide gap between july and december. In any case though, i don't think Avatar IMAX will be coming out by then anyway. With DVD releases scheduled for the mid year of 2010, there won't be an incentive tio see Avatar in IMAX anymore.

I don't get this reasoning...

I don't plan to buy DVD simply because it can't compare in quality to IMAX 3D. Getting a house theater with a remotely comparable quality is 10k$+ and a house (if I setup something like this in condo/townhouse, HOA will eat me alive). I don't have 10k$ for that anyway...

More or less, what i meant is that once the DVD comes out, there won't be an incentive to go out to the theater to see Avatar anymore.

IMAX is incentive enough.

For my birthday, my sister told me she would get me the DVD when it came out. So Ima get Avatar for free!

Well even with the DVD and Blu-ray out (both only in 2D so far) there may be enough interest to see it in 3D to bring it back to IMAX 3D and Real3D. That will of course also depend on how Avatar does at the Oscars. If it makes Best Picture I could see it coming back.

Perhaps due to the fact that the number of 3D TV/projectors isn't big because of the big cost, there might be some interest to experience Avatar again during the summer, but this scenario is quite off for now , I didn't see any kind of announcement. I'd like to see that, experience Avatar in 3D back at home, when I have more free time, pff sign in me for the petition :D.

Oh the 3D Blu-ray is coming. JC has already announced it. Timing is still a bit shaky (Dec. 2010) but it's definitely planned.

I wouldn't completely plan on that, if you get the chance, better ask the theater manager in advance if he plans to keep Avatar going till the 4th.

IMAX films generally stay in place until the next one comes out. So you should be ok for seeing it March 4th. The national release of alice in Wonderland should take place either on midnight of the 4th, or the very next fay on the 5th. According to my theater's manager, the last IMAX screening of Avatar is set for 6:20pm on the 4th.

Your theater manager might be being too optimistic.  It takes a while to splice the IMAX reel (it comes in 30-40 cardboard boxes, and has to be manually spliced by the projectionist) - and that has to be done directly onto the IMAX platters... so bearing in mind that Avatar has to be taken off the platters and cut up to put back into the Avatar labeled boxes before this can even start, you're more realistically looking at Avatar's last showing on the 2rd... maybe the 3rd if you have a hard working projectionist.

The manager tag teams the task by having two people do the work. At least that's what he tells me. He told me that as soon as he gets a print, he has someone starting to assemble it. Then he generally gets another person to help. He tends to have teams of two to build prints and load the projectors. Faster turn around times he said. Whether or not it's actually easier to get prints assembled with two people doing it is unknown.

So that's why having Avatar and another movie at IMAX is overstretch due to this work, unless you got 2 or more auditorium's of IMAX in the theater.

or your IMAX is fake (digital) IMAX.
indeed - if your IMAX is digital IMAX then they can show Avatar right up until Disney force them to switch it off and put on Alice instead...

OK - so next time I have to go to San Francisco or Dublin since those are the only "real" IMAX theatres here in the Bay Area ... everything else is digital. Or make a trip to Monterey ...
