The big IMAX in San Francisco (AMC Metreon) is still showing it. And it looks like it will run there at least another week - if not longer.

As the 5th is tomorrow, this thread will start to die--fast. Without cluttering the forum with yet another thread on when and where Avatar is and isn't playing, would anyone mind if we posted where it IS playing (next week) and such? I called moviephone (it's an L.A. thing: 213-777-film (or 777-3456) and the guy tells you where movies are playing and stuff. He said Avatar is playing all over L.A. A lot less theaters, but here in San Diego it got bumped by "Alice" (the FAKE Alice movie; warning--it is NOT the original--which I will go see if the fan reviews are any good).

I am interested to see if Avatar is still showing over the next few weeks, even if I have to go to a bargain theater.

Okay, so the old podcast is here: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/radioavatar It was goofy fun that ended too soon, but we had creative people. I hope we can get a new gang together (interested? PM me, let's make some magic!)
(Very old, outdated) Na'vi FUN activity book is here: But what are you doing? Let me know! :)

Hmm, there was some chatter about AMC boycotting Alice over DVD release dates - so it looks like that might have happened at your theater.  But once Alice starts up then Avatar will vanish.  I actually thought AMC had worked out it the issue with Disney... maybe not.  Interesting.

My theater is still showing Avatar in 2D (three times a day), and Avatar in 3D (four times a day), but we'll see how that holds up.

So there is a possibility that AMC will still be showing Avatar for a while (till clash of the titans?)? or they probably will fix it by then.

...
AMC Eastridge 15 in San Jose has taken Avatar off the IMAX and Real3D screens for Alice and only continues showing Avatar on the 2D screen. So it seems this is on a theatre to theatre basis and not all of AMC.
But then the IMAX at AMC Eastridge 15 is digital so a switch of movies may be as easy as swapping hard drives while changing a movie on a big 15/70 IMAX screen involves much more and is a real hassle. So I understand that they may be reluctant to take down a movie that is still going strong after 11 weeks for a movie that may only draw a crowd for two or three weekends and then falls off fast.
And those IMAX screen that manage to hold on to Avatar for a few more weeks may see full houses again due to the diminished competition. Well, time will tell.
Also, Avatar wasn't done yet with making money as that chart from The Numbers below shows. Without this forced removal it may have reached 800 million for the US and Canadian market and who knows how high it may have climbed worldwide ...

Odeon in the UK had disputes with Alice due to the DvD release dates but then they came to an agreement it seems as Alice is showing in almost, if not all, of the Odeon cinemas. It's a shame my cinema only has 1 3D screen :(

Avatar had a solid performance this weekend again. Of the 4 saturday and sunday prime time screenings, 3 sold out completely with the final sunday screening at 80%. Friday night, however, Avatar hit a bit of a low due to the AIW rush. I believe Avatar only had about 60% attendance friday night. The manager said that while AIW had initial sellouts on friday and saturday, the sunday screenings didn't sellout, but neared capacity. He told me the only initial sellouts for AIW was the 4 friday night screenings, all the saturday imax screenings, 2 of the real 3D saturday screenings, and the 3 sunday imax screenings. All of the other screenings were near capacity though.

So AIW is taking a chunk of the crowd at this point. And it probably will for another week or so. Avatar is still hanging on though. I can't believe it's still selling out.
See that shadow? It's the last one you're gonna see.

Oh hell yeah! Of course Avatar rules!!! I just don't think that society as a whole is ready to accept a movie such as Avatar as the best there is... (even thought its freaking amazing!!!!!)

Damn, and notice he said this message is coming from the exhibitors. If the exhibitors are in . . . this could actually happen, couldn't it!

Avatar can hit 3 billion if they can let it loose in the US and some of the best-selling European countries. $3 billion is a prize worthy of any chest. That would all-but-permanently cement it as the #1 movie of all time, naysayers be damned. It also migh--might get close to 1 billion US, but that may be asking too much.

I have no doubt it will come back out, and after the Summer spends itself (Hollywood always fights itself releasing all the movies at once--only to leave us in early Fall and Mid/Late-Winter with NOTHING). Now it is just a matter of timing, and finding ways to get the casual fan to see the movie again (hint: extra footage).

This is a wake-up call to all LN members, podcast cast and crew, and AV conventioneers to start preparing for the re-release of Avatar. Get your strategies in place to get your friends and even frenemies (yes, that is a word) into seats. Screw the Sumer blockbusters. This is OUR movie, and it is time we made ourselves actually matter (in the greater scheme of things).

P.S. We should have an all LN screening :D

No, reaching 3 billion is not too much of a stretch.
But it will hardly be the permanent top position. If the record isn't broken earlier, Avatar 2 will most likely break it - if they don't screw it up.

As for a re-release later this year - I really hope for an extended edition. A plain re-release - after the DVD/BD is out - may not draw spectacular crowds. But now that JC and FOX know that the fans have no problems with a longer movie they may re-think and insert more of the footage they left in the cutting room. An extended version re-released worldwide could draw enough to even beat the 4 billion.

... but hopefully it's not only extended by measly 12 minutes - it should be the full 40 minutes they have or even more!
They made enough money to go back and render more of the footage they have ...

The first edition DVD is a "barebones" edition. Little more the feature film plus maybe a few bonus materials. Full extended editions are due out later in the year. Sounds like Fox is going to do what New Line Cinemas did with Lord of the Rings: Offer a basic edition at first, then offering better, enhanced editions later on. More or less, milking the cash cow in a way.

Or like what FOX did (with Star Wars)? O/T how many damned variations of Star Wars Video/DVD have there been now/ I still remember when they had the chutzpah to say "This is your LAST chance to own the original version before we come out with an enhanced version (soon!)."

That's like saying, "hey, we know we have been selling you this same lemon for 3 years now, but BUY IT NOW! (<---flashy lights, sirens, circus music) because next month we will unveil the ner version (4 whole extra minutes) which we will sell you on, because you have the "old and busted version."

Back O/T: FOX is brilliant in getting the public to buy things--no matter how stupid the idea. So we may see 3-4 different variations of Avatar in DVD, including the same DVD with different covers: The Jake set, Grace set, the Neytiri set, the RDA set (special limited edition)... hmm I should work for FOX. I am just evil enough to design all of this.
