I still think Avatar could be the Star Wars of this generation  ;D
And who's to say the Na'vi don't have the other tsahaylu-tentacle-thing on their head. Maybe it just devolved into a shorter version.
Plus, the Na'vi were descendant from those monkey-things they see at the beginning. When they got out of the trees stopped hanging from the trees 24/7, they lost the need for the split arms.
Breathing... err... dunno.
but the ìkran and toruk are hexapod too, which explains the dual pairs of wings and the pair of legs.

I would argue that it's definitely the Star Wars of our generation. Technological breakthroughs+incredible effects+archetypal+ story+cool spin+engaging characters+incredible sucess...all of those things were what marked Star Wars, and are marking Avatar in the annals of cinema history as we speak.
+trilogy! : D

Cross fingers and queues for no Ewoks or JarJar binks...
The Ewoks were cool! Don't hassle the Hoff Ewoks. And I don't think Cameron is stupid enough to put jar jar in it.

I liked another work that involved him, where I think he has had brushes with the possibility...

I would like a trilogy.  ;)

Cameron is a well known perfectionist who by the way is brilliant so I do not think that we have to worry about the sequel being shallow.

Well, I wouldn't be too sure for that. He made quite some flops. But since Avatar is his baby, I hope it'll be good. No sorry, I hope it'll be perfect. Really, so far I've only seen bad trilogy's. I hope this would be the first one that could change my mind.

Lord of The Rings was phenominal. Then again it was orignally a book trilogy so I suppose you are right. There are no good trilogies...

I think Good and Bad trilogies is a matter of preference and personal taste.

For instance, I think that Star Wars was a good Trilogy, then the Star Wars prequels happened so that should be considered a separate trilogy that was good visually sad story wise and could have done without JarJar and Hayden.

Terminator could have been a good trilogy except for the existence of Terminator "3".

The Alien Movies were probably better off stopping at "3", but 4 was interesting until the white/grey alien/human hybrid appeared, then my suspension of disbelief deflated completely.

The predator movies stopped at two, but should have stopped at one.

AVP was far better as a comic, and will likely not become a trilogy, but I liked 2 and not 1.

The Last Airbender movies is being constructed as a Trilogy, it could be good.  I doubt it can have the wow factor of AVATAR visually, so I hope they focus more on the characters.  I watched all three seasons of the Animation nine times when I got them on DVD.

On the Topic of this thread.  Avatar as a pre-planned trilogy helmed by a man obsessed with the visual spectacle and upping the bar in cinematography for story telling.  I think he knows that he would undermine himself not to make the sequels at least a touch better, achieving some sort of excruciatingly satisfying finale at the end of the third film.

Avatar 3 could break our brains...

I think that Avatar 2 will take place in another planet that is near Pandora. There are some people talking about this...

and maybe Cameron will create another alien race.

What do you think about that?

Tìhawnu Ta'em

I detest the idea of the that. I would love to see Cameron go more in depth with the Na'vi and their culture and customs. But then again Cameron might have an amazing idea involving other species of aliens.

Sequels that were planned from the start can rock.  Sequels that were tacked on after the franchise took off to milk it for more money tend to fall flat.

You're right, but did Mr.Cameron have sequels for Avatar in mind from the beginning?

Are the sequels going to take as long as Avatar 1 did to produce? :D

The sequels would not take as long because the technology has already been invented and at there disposal.

My brain exploded a long time ago.  Luckily it was reconstructed, and I'm ready for Avatar 3 to make it explode again!!!

Like I've said, I'm not worried about the "wow" factor for the upcoming movies becoming the "suck" factor, because of all the reasons we've already stated: it's James Cameron, it was a pre-planned trilogy, as Txur'Itan pointed out, and we've all seen the movie and know how well done the story and visual aspects were.

However, what does concern me is that rumor floating around of a different planet with different species as the second movie.  It just does not make sense to me that Cameron would completely abandon the Jake-and-Neytiri story.  I mean, the way they ended the movie, to me, makes me think that there must be more to the story.  I mean, I would bet that Jake would have narrated, in some way, shape, or form (or even maybe as text at the end of the movie) that the humans never returned.  THAT would seal it or me that the story is finished.  But I never saw any inclination of that.  And we all know how Selfridge was about those dollar-signs.  After all, we all know that, as unfortunate as it is, in today's world, money drives EVERYTHING.

There's no way this story is over.

Jake and Neytiri are confirmed characters for the next movies. Don't worry, they will be there.
