So for the expanded and for sure for the 3D version they have to split it on two or even more disks.

Not exactly true, Blu-ray disks have been developed up to 500GB in size, long gone are the days of swapping out disks ;)

Yeah, but not readable by regular players, and forcing everyone to buy new players is not a good idea when you're trying to get people to upgrade from DVDs, since people won't dare to upgrade in case they'll need to buy new players, again.

Not necessarily.  Pioneer claims their 400 GB disc is compatible with current blu-ray players and a firmware upgrade.

I still don't expect Avatar to use them.

Well whatever it is, all hail the PS3 as it will most likely get support for pretty much everything through updates :)
