Okay, so I was returning home on an international flight earlier today when I glanced up the isle on my way to the bathroom and I noticed a first class passenger watching an Avatar trailer. I, of course, started watching it over his shoulder. After about 10 seconds, I realized it wasn't a trailer. Somehow, this guy was watching the movie! It was the final battle scene with no cuts or interruptions like a making-of film or anything. So my question is this: how did they get early access to Avatar? Does this kind of thing happen often? If I had known, I might have paid the 370 euros...

Ahem... I forgot to mention that this was a screen built into the seat in front of him. And isn't that... well, I don't want to say the "p" word...

So are you saying that the plane had the movie and the guy chose to watch it, or that the guy had the movie and watched it on the plane's seat screen? If it's the second case then it's probably  . . . well, I don't want to say the "p" word . . .

The "p" word is "copyright infringement", and we should all be treading very lightly:

Airlines always get films before general release. No idea why, might just be to keep the passengers entertained a bit better.

If the airline has the movie in their selection, it can be watched. If Avatar were available, i'd watch it over and over again. Especially on a 1st class international flight. Airlines tend to secure the latest and greatest films, so that passengers have a good selection of current movies to choose from.

Of course you'd watch it over and over again.. you've seen it in theaters 100 times ;D
(that's pretty impressive, by the way)

It doesn't quite seem fair that they get movies before everyone else.  I hope they have to pay extra :P

Well, there's a reason first class tickets cost several hundred dollars for international or domestic cross country flights. I've mostly flown first class on upgrades, and it's worth the money. Though on certain flights, the movie selection fails sometimes. But i still use all the amenities to make the cost worth it.

Sometimes things like on demand and such get it before it's out on home video as well.  I know the local cable co has been advertising the heck out of how they have Sherlock Holmes on demand, for example.

Colleges also get movies ahead of time.  Bro goes to Notre Dame and they get movies like 2 months before they come out on DVD.

Well, would you say it's also unfair that movie theaters get movies before everyone else? Probably not, but the copy of the movie the airline gets is likely the same digital 2D version that the theaters get. It's not like the airline got to buy the DVD/Blu-ray before everyone else.

Went on Oman Air recently; they had it (in all classes as it's quite a long flight from Britain, 7 hours) - I watched it constantly of course ;)

For some inexplicable reason the seats came with composite video ports (no, I'm not kidding) - would have been easy for someone to obtain a copy to bridge the gap between now and the Blu-ray release...

I have seen the blu Ray version if Avatar my friend has an uncle who works in 20th Century fox so he always gets new releases real early, I watched it a few days back only saw about 1hr as I had to go up to Everett so I had to leave his house early. But to say this happens often, that would be a no.

Movies are usually shown on coast to coast or international flights.  Those in flight movies are usually current, a small selection, but same as what was out maybe a few months prior in theaters.  United doesn't lock it to first class, neither does JAL, you can sit in economy and see reasonably current movies on those flights.

yeah but Avatar, i could see in a week from now possibly but not sooner. I want to know the airline, if it is Virgin than it doesn't surprise me (they have money).

EDIT: just looked at Virgin's (America) list of in flight movies, and no Avatar, but you never know who is on those flights, it could have been someone from Fox or Lightstorm Media, in which case they could have a copy of Avatar and then just have it piped through to that screen only (of course I'm guessing I don't fly often enough to know).

nope it's not just that guy who would of seen it

you do get new films on them because my dad who flies allover the world see's most new films several times over on the flights..
(he watched avatar twice through on his last flight..... he says he doesn't like it but somehow i don't believe him  :D)
Only mostly AWOL.

Zefanaya

Irayo for clearing that up, guess some airlines act like movie theaters... To think in a few years (if nit next year) we may be able to see Avatar (1 or 2) in 3D on our flights.
