seriously a missile would have destroyed the tree so why mess around rigging up the shuttle as a bomber?

Missile tracking won't work...

...they'll have to fire line of sight. If they bring the fight to us, then we have the home field advantage.

The next part of this conversation is where someone says that the RDA don't need missile tracking, they could use ballistics. I have an answer to that as well.

The funny thing is that a tree is a stationary object.

unguided missiles/rockets would do the trick.

You don't need it to track.

Lol, they're so stupid that they can't fire without line of sight.

Jake did.
Pasha, an Avatar story, my most recent fanfic, Avatar related, now complete.

The Dragon Affair my last fanfic, non Avatar related.

It was supposed to be a "shock and awe campaign". A missle would have been too weak for the intended effect, I think.

Agreed.  Having something explode would be much more of a "shock-and-awe" effect.  Quaritch not only wanted to destroy the target, but as he essentially said, he wanted the Na'vi to fear them.  Doing something that would make them do that was, in his mind, the right route to take.

Off-topic, I like how when the ship actually exploded, it wasn't a "Hollywood-style" explosion (You know, when a car explodes or something in a movie, that all it was is a gasoline explosion).  It looked much more like a mine explosion would be, and I give Cameron props for sticking to truth there.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. Typically, explosives in strip mining are low brissance/high volume and tend to throw things around rather than shatter them into dust. The effect in the film was a bit showy, but tended to be correct in the kinetic action of the blast.

Well, you also can argue that it seems showy because of the fact that part of the explosion was whatever fuels the shuttle, which, if my memory serves correctly, is still some sort of fossil fuel...

That's true. It did look good.

And in Hollywood, that's all that matters.  But you get bonus points if you stick to the real-world pyrotechnics. ;)

It's a SSTO vehicle with a huge payload fraction so that's not going to cut it. Whatever propellant system they use must have a crazily high Isp.
