Does Avatar can get more than the Oscar for the Special Effects?

In one word, yes.
It was the best movie for this year, and the audience showed that in the past 5 weeks. But the audience isn't the on who's giving the Oscars away, we can just hope for the best.
Best Movie
Best Director
are the biggest and most "valuable" awards and that's at least what Avatar should get.

Best movie for this year? More like best movie ever ever in the history of everness!

definitely best director. after reading about the challenges of last 4 years to make it happen (and the "cut" they had to make midway to make it fit time and budget), this might be a textbook example for management class.
best movie... I'd like to, but we may get surprises here...
Where is my NDD fix?

Avatar will win every oscar including ones it has absolutely nothing to do with, that just how awesome it is.

How can I *not* love you with comments like that?

Well, IMHO: Best Director, Visual Effects, I would say a strong candidate for the big one (Best Movie) because of the layering of characters and subtle environmentalism/consumerism messages woven throughout the film. The cast really pulled their weight--not a bad performance in the bunch. That may or not directly translate into a "Best Movie," but I am hoping it will factor in. Is there a "Best Casting" category?  If there is, Av should hands down get it. Everyone was "necessary to the film" (unlike that last Indiana Joke (4)), and well played. Cameron really knows how to draw out the best performances from his actors. I am hoping it picks up Editing as well. This is a lesser-known award, but the movie was shot very tight if you notice. No choppiness, no scenes that drew out too long.

Okay, so the old podcast is here: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/radioavatar It was goofy fun that ended too soon, but we had creative people. I hope we can get a new gang together (interested? PM me, let's make some magic!)
(Very old, outdated) Na'vi FUN activity book is here: But what are you doing? Let me know! :)

The allegedly reliable Oscar predictor machine says Avatar will win best picture but not best director.

I reckon it's got a good chance of winning best editing too for the same reasons mentioned above.  It'll probably win a whole load of technical Oscars too.

it's just a real pity that non of the actors will win anything, because the Academy probably just isn't progressive enough to realise that the motion capture technology that James Cameron used means they really are being accurately represented on the screen.  Zoe's performance in particular in the part where she learns about Jakes true reason for becoming part of the Na'vi is very well acted (imho).

How can it not win best director lol, James Cameron's last 2 film's are number 1 and 2 for highest grossing films.

...Because the academy are fickle
...Because the academy typically vote against the public just because they can
...Because the academy is mainly (25%) actors, and a picture where the main actors aren't even seen on the screen for most of the picture doens't impress actors.  Actors don't like CGI actors.

I wish James Cameron the best, I suppose I'm just being realistic (and then I'll be even more pleased when Avatar sweeps all the Oscars!)

Of course it is! But the Oscar gives award for the best movie of the year. If it would have given best movie ever ever in the history of everness obviously (!) Avatar would have won!

While I too would love to see Avatar smash its way through the academy, I also feel that it probably wont get the recognition it deserves, even if only because they might decide it got enough from the golden globes. I would be surprised if director and movie didnt go to it though, but you never know. The original predictions for avatar had it only making 150 million total, so its hard to say if any predictions are right about it.

Raltaw

Definitely, Avatar has a great story, usage of special effects, script, and everything else I can think of.
