Stop giving me hope that there is a Pandora-ish planet!
Because by the time we can go there I will be long dead :(

You are just going to have to find a cure for death.

You know this reminds me of a commercial i once saw on Hulu, it was kind of vague, but it sounded as if they were on the verge of finding a cure for "aging"

Now i doubt that, but who knows, science has come a long way, all it takes is a little imagination and some vital scientific mishaps and maybe a few chemical explosions to make something impossible... possible.

There are many cellular processes that would need to be managed to prevent the effects of aging.  If they are all "cured" humans could be come immortal, "for a price".  The down side?  It hasn't happened yet, and probably won't for the next 100 years, the tech necessary to stop all of the negative processes implies a strict need for "nano robotic" surgery, or re-programmable DNA that does not cause aberrant mutations.

I am tracking this subject, here some interesting articles.

Its unfortunate that Immortality is not equal to youth. But those articles are interesting.

Depends on how you quantify youth.

* For some youth is based on looks;
     biologically, if we had halted cell degeneration, it would make everyone look similar age after adult maturity.  And probably equivalent to early to mid 20's.

* For others youth is based on attitude;
     having my ex-wife's 92 year grandmother hit on me like a teenage girl, it was flattering in an "I am not comfortable with this but I will just let it all slide" sort of way.  It was not pretty when she started getting vulgar about it.

* Shorter physical passage of time, or mitigated life experiences;
     Being immortal in this phase of naivete would probably not be desirable for anyone.  I know that I hated high-school. I could not deal with the way teenagers related to each other, it was incredibly chaotic.  I understood why years later, but it would have been better to know back then.

Very true, and very interesting.

I realize this is an older thread, but I was looking up information on the Alpha Centauri system and came upon another pretty nice article on exomoons possibility in that star system.  So a bump perhaps, but very cool information!  ;)

Centauri Dreams

Edited to add: Now that I actually look at the thread header, it seems like this could go under Science.  Any mods with a suggestion to repost there under separate topic, of if you can move it?

Good to see some more attention to this - moons multiply potential worlds by orders of magnitude :)

I never understand the assumption "Earthlike == habitable for aliens" when their habitable zone could differ from humans' >:(

Still, if it IS Earthlike, that's still amazing as it then becomes potentially habitable for humans themselves :)

Lisa Kaltenegger talks about that Pandora could be real

Lisa Kaltenegger is a researcher on extrasolar planets, rocky and super-Earths, habitable zone and spectral fingerprints of exoplanets
She is a EN Research Group Leader at MPIA Lecturer at Harward Research Associate at SAO

I don't know if she is working with JC, but she has worked with film crews and writers
